    www.GoNintendo.com rumoured:
    Wii-mote to feature mic, VOIP?
    May 25th, 2006

What a funny world we live in. I was just discussing this story with someone in an email about an hour ago. I told that person that I was going to hang back on posting this rumour until it started to spread a little bit more. I have been following it for what seems a week now, and haven't gotten any more info out of it. No sooner than I send my E-mail, the story pops up on Joystiq and a couple of other big sites. Sometimes I think someone is keeping tabs on my E-mails!

The rumour on the street is two-fold. First off, we are hearing that the Wii-mote will feature a microphone as well as the speaker. This addition would seem to make perfect sense, making the Wii-mote an all-in-one audio package. We know that Nintendo loves microphones (Famicom, DS, N64 just to name a few) so seeing one pop up on the Wii-mote wouldn't be too much of a surprise.

The next part of the rumour goes hand in hand with the microphone. The Wii is rumoured to have VOIP capabilities, making it possible to place phone calls via an internet connection to the Wii. While this is definitely possible, you have to look at Nintendo's stance on gaming consoles. They want their system to be, first and foremost, a game machine. Would Nintendo add in a feature like VOIP, and does it feel that the expected Wii-user would want a feature like this?
Don't think I really buy either of these rumours. Ya never know though...

Microphone. yes that is very possible, one that would go down well.

    VOIP. no.

If VOIP could be done perfectly I'd be all for it. It's a big 'if' though!

I'm getting a Wii as I want a console thats just for games. I dont want to be online 24/7, have a browser, email or anything like that. Thank god for Nintendo keeping it real :)

It follows all the set rules.

A well placed spot of it, and no mistake. I salute you.

Leave VoIP to other companies. The Wii is a games console. I personally wouldn't make use of VoIP. Personally I'm against the idea of it mainly because I wouldn't use it! However I'd be afraid of it pushing up the cost of the Wii as well, and I don't see it helping sell more consoles. HD would help shift more, ask the average person on the street about VoIP and I'd hazzard a guess that they wouldn't know of it.

    It's not console selling.

They wouldn't market it as voip though. they'd market it as "call your friends on their Wii". It sounds like genius to me.

Ahhh, I totally misunderstood the term "VOIP". I thought it was voice recognition software or something. Shows what I know. This being the case, I'm not for it then, regardless of how well it's done, although (of course) I'm not against it.

I'd be quite surprised if it didn't have a microphone, what with one in the DS and microphone accessories for the Cube. OK if it is bundled they lose the opportunity to charge you for one, but peripherals aren't that widely used and who the hell is going to put microphone functionality in their game that not everybody can use when they'll be far more concerned with making use of all the other stuff the controller can do.

Having it as standard would be best as then it is available whenever desired. You just know they are going to do a Super Mario Singstar with it.

I can see how VoIP could be a selling point I guess when you put it that way, but I still don't see how often I'd use it.

Give me a games console, with great Nintendo games and I'll be a happy chap.

One reason they might not have one is getting it to work while you are flinging the controller around. Maybe they figure it wouldn't be worth it if it only worked when you hold the controller relatively still.

But for games where the controller is simply a microphone this wouldn't be a huge problem. I guess a reason for not having a microphone would be that if Wii online allows voice chat, you'll have to have some headset idea for that.

Still don't think they should not include a mic. Most games I can think of involving a mic don't require much other input at the time of using the mic.

It's more likely to be a microphone attachment rather then one embedded on the wiimote.

Nintendogs Wii - with free invisible dog lead remote attachment!

    Sounds good...apart from the name.

Remember FF: Crystal Chronicles, where players recieved secret objectives on their GBAs?

That would be neat, if the Wii remote could whisper to individual players, during a multiplayer game.
