Wii, Why? /puts thinking hat on

We all know the Wii is not the powerhouse the XBox360 and PS3 are, but Nintendo has its reasons and a lot of people agree with them. However I saw my housemate playing Crystal Chronicles last night using the GBA to control his little dood on the screen and it got me thinking, maybe there is more to Nintendo’s plan.

With the rate of technological advances in the tablet, palm PC and handheld market how long will it be before someone could make a handheld as powerful as the Wii? Or more to the point, how long before Nintendo could make a handheld as powerful as the Wii?

Its got me thinking, a Zelda you play on the Wii then port to your handheld and continue to play on the bus, no downgrade in graphical quality or gameplay, just a seamless transition from stationary to portable. Or you go round your friends to play Mario Kart, no need for split screen you've got your portable Wii, now the fecker cant see you sneaking up on him with a green shell at the ready.

The PS2 and PSP are near equals but there’s very little connection between them, the PS3 seems to be encouraging more interconnectivity but its obvious superiority in power means the PSP functionality maybe limited to gimmickry like the rear view mirror displayed at E3.

Nintendo's Wii console seems the perfect platform to have a sister handheld, an extension of game play when you leave the house and natural successor to the DS in a couple of years.

    Anywho... back to work.

If Nintendo announce yet another handheld, I may just have to drown them. In lava.

Seriously though, a hand held Wii would have to have different input methods, different displays (I doubt they'll go back to one screen), would perform best with different save and disc accessing systems. I really can't see this as feasible even if the next ninty handheld (which I reckon is at least four years off and probably quite a lot more) does have a similar level of graphics oomph to the Wii.

I'm thinking the next nintendo handheld might go the way of the ipod and have a HD or NAND storage rather than a card or disk system, the data involved is getting to great to stick with carts/cards and a UMD system is expensive, complex and power hungry.

It could connect to the Wii using the wireless/bluetooth link the controller uses to transfer data or even whole games.

The DS is cool but awkward, a single widescreen, touch sensitive display would decrease the weight and size of the console and I can see them switching back to a one screen design in the future. The touch screen to counter the motion sensing controller thou may not be suitable for every game (Wii Sports).

You'll see a lot more psp/ps3 connectivity because of the wirelessnessnessness.

i dont disagree, but i think it could be of serious benefit to nintendo to have a handheld as powerfull as its home console

Are the DS and the Wii not wirelessnesslessly connectable?

    Yes, hence my comment:

The DS is already the sister handheld for the Wii - there will be downloadable DS demos etc. through the Wii and I'm sure a fair few Wii games will pick up on the Wifi cononectivity.

Wasn't the Wii Crystal Chronicles supposed to wirelessly use the DS, in the same way the GC one could connect to GBAs?

IMHO - WiiMote + nunchuck = impossible to make Wii into a handheld machine. Plus the discs are DVD size.
No doubt Ninty will eventually make a successor to the DS, but I very much doubt it will be a "portable Wii".

Oh, and PSP is quite noticeably not as powerful as a PS2 - it just has similar kinds of games which makes it look that way ;-)
