It only took a short time when I downloaded it last night; maybe you lost your connection. Unplug your console and try again. Remove any games in the drive before going onto Xbox Live.

Dont worry, it'll be fine, the 360 keeps a copy of the previous firmware in flashram. Just power off and restart.
