Two different sets of opponents online tonight, both times I quit during the second race because of snakers. I hate quitting in the middle championships as its not good for the other players... but I am getting seriously pissed with snakers. It kills the online multiplayer. It's not a valid method, its exploitation of a game mechanic that they obviously didn't spot during testing. But is there anything we can do about it? Grrr, MarioKart online ain't no fun anymore. :o(

as somebody who is about to succumb to the temptations of the DS Lite, and quite probably gettiing Mario Kart sooner or later, I nervously ask - what exactly is this snaking I keep hearing about?

I do of course realise that I have lost all my gaming cred in asking this, but I am sleepy, and I need answers dammit

Not sure it's an exploit, but I agree it kills the game.

While I of course am the complete master of the art, it's far too wearisome. ;)

It's a technique which allows you to accelerate more for a few seconds with the use of the digipad - originally meant as a skillful way to drive through corners even faster, you can also use it on straights. If someone does it all the time, everyone has to do it to stand a chance. And like I said, it's pretty tiresome after a while, as you constantly need to waggle the digipad left and right.

Unfortunately its now used by so many 'good' Mariokart players, its no longer seen as cheating, but just sound tactics. I completely agree that its a crock of shit.

No I can't snake, and I don't want to. Essentially it's using the drifting/boosting mechanism on straights, so giving you boosts. You can spot people doing it because they shoot diagonally across the straights, and render you unable to catch them as they're too far ahead. And it totally kills online. Great.

Actually I only just discovered that you have the boost as long as you get the sparks and are still drifting, no need to pull out of it.

It is a game breaking mechanic, along with the inbalanced item rewards. If you lead from the start in an SP race you can pretty much guarantee to get hit by 2 blue shells.

This sounds like when all the peoples asses I kick in Street Fighter get made because I keep throwing fireballs. The fact is, that's how I weed out the crappy players at the arcade- any Street Fighter worth his salt can deal with an onslaught of fireballs.

Learn to snake and quit whining...

I gave up on MarioKart multiplayer 'cause of snaking. Its not that its difficult to do, or particularly skillful, its more that its completely unfun; it makes the game feel like hard work.

Plus fireballs are a regular move, it's supposed to happen. Snaking is exploiting something that should only occur in corners. It's a balance issue in the game people are using to thier advantage.

If I recall correctly, in Street Fighter II the combo system we all love was actually a glitch in the gameplay that some really good players capitalized on...

I've always been a Mario Kart Snaker. It's the only way to play. I don't have Mario Kart DS though.

This is exactly the point. Snaking removes the fun from racing in MK, it makes it a chore and you feel defeated before the end of the first corner because of someone insisting on doing something which means that, unless you all do it too, they will win whatever. Skill in MK is about using boosts in corners to achieve the fastest line, and tactically using the weapons given to you - not snaking across the straights.

I can't snake, it would be good to play against other people who can't. If anyone is interested, let me know! (I'll get back with my friend code, don't have it to hand since I stopped playing MK due to my inability to cope with snaking :o hehe

So why then do the staff ghosts do it. It is not a "bug" they were not aware of. Thats doesnt meen I condone it though.

Mario Kart sucks, it's not even a game - it's a charade which poses as fun. How can you argue that snaking takes away all the skill? You don't need skill to win mario kart, that's the whole point of it. Just hang in last place, collect the best items and win on the last lap.

Snaking was intentionally placed in the game - that fact has been stressed numerous times by Nintendo.
Honestly, learn to deal with it.

People using game exploitation to win shocker.

You think most people play multiplayer games to have fun?

Man, next you'll be telling me bunnyhoppers should be banned from Counterstrike servers.

That doesn't actaully mean it works or was a good design decision.
