It saddens me to say this; but I think Nintendo’s next home console will fail to catch the imagination of the gaming public. I was initially excited about the Wii and the Wii-mote controller; but as the launch of the console draws nearer it appears that Nintendo have lost the plot. I think the unexpected success of the Nintendo DS could be a major factor in the failure of the Wii. Nintendo think graphics don’t matter; well they don’t on a handheld console. As I look at the Launch line up on IGN I can’t help but think “These multi-platform games are going to look shit on the Wii.” Both Zelda and Metroid look mediocre on the Wii and playability wise the Twilight Princess doesn’t cut the mustard at the moment; this leaves Mario as the only franchise Nintendo have left.

Don’t get me wrong there will be fun to be had; but if Mario, Metroid and Zelda aren’t AAA titles Nintendo might as well give up.

PS: I haven't been possessed by albundy. :)

    How about the non-gaming public?

Consider how many non-gamers bought the DS for the Brain Training game.

For crying out loud just give it a chance , let it come out, if it turns out shite - post another moan thread.

Meh, thread like these are the reason I avoid the Nintendo VIP website.

Console success/failure discussions get an enormous thumbs down.

I see where you're coming from though.

DS sales have been phenomenal; especially when Nintendo were looking for a 10% share of the handheld market. In the US in June the DS sold more units than the PS2 and 360 combined sales; in Japan the DS is doing even better with about 67% of the total market. But there still are a lot of negative comments concerning the Wii even from diehard Nintendo sites. Like I say if Nintendo are full of confidence because of the DS revolution and believe that the Wii will succeed because it is different; they might be in for a shock.

Think you're wrong there. I very much expect the Wii promotional campaign to be the most wide-spread out of the next-gen consoles. e.g. ads in 'Womans Own'. Nintendo have been quite good at convincing journos that games/consoles are 'news' recently, with 'Brain Training' popping up everywhere. 'Wii Sports' might do the same for the Wii, with hearty Daily Mail coverage applauding the promotion of 'family' gaming etc etc.

That list looks a bit uninspired, but then all lists do, don't they? There's one or two on there which might be completely different to what we're used to though.

Oh - but if Microsoft drop the price of a 360 core down to say £199 in November, that will certainly bugger things up for Nintendo.

I really hope they're anticipating a 360 price drop and how best to respond, because a Wii priced at £150+ is not going to compete very well against a £199 360.

The Wii will retail for £139.99; many websites have the price at £133 which is $250. Nintendo hope to have shipped/sold 7 million Wii units by the end of their fiscal year March 31st 2007. If they can manage that; the world will be Nintendo's oyster. If Nintendo can get the balance between (Fun Games) a quick blast of Wii-mote madness and (Serious Games) a 30+ hour adventure; I'll certainly be sold. :)

My Wii release prediction dates are....

    Japan. 12/10/06
    USA. 21/11/06
    Europe. 1/12/06

Nintendo could hold back and launch the console in the US first; considering how well the DS did over Thanksgiving 2005. I'm predicting release dates and ATI haven't finished developing the graphics processor yet; I have heard that there's quite a few Flipper GPU's lying about at ATI. :)

    How about the non-gaming public?

Consider how many non-gamers bought the DS for the Brain Training game.

I recommended a DS to a 39 yr old collegue at work recently. In the past he'd dissmissed the DS as a bit of a shit console as he already had a PSP.

When the Lite came out and I had it at work his opinion changed completely and just this morning he said he brought one and didn't realise what he'd been missing.

He'd gotten bored of the PSP and the games available and saw braintraining and Zoo Tycoon and thought the DS was the console for him.

I think that many concentrate on graphics as though they are the measure that make a console 'next-gen' but in reality you can have the same or similar experience on your PS2 or Xbox. For me Nintendo are doing something different and exciting, and with the unexpected success of the DS I think it's the kinda thing the market really wants/needs.

Sid, I think it will do very well in EU, USA and Japan. Globally, it'll be in second place in terms of units sold. I also think there will be a far greater involvement from third parties.

I don't think 'Nintendo' as a name/brand will be synonamous with the term 'console' like it used to be, and it'll still be 'playstation' as it seems to have been since the PS1's release.

Gaming public != Wii's target market

Nintendo are trying to develop a new market while Sony and Microsoft are left fighting over the stagnant "hardcore gamer" market.

If it does, it won't be due to the old franchises, it will be Brain Training type doo dahs. Look at the media attention/free publicity Brain Training gets.

Thanks for that. I think it'll be a relative success ie. it'll make Nintendo a profit.

Zelda, SMG, Metroid, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Project H.A.M.M.E.R just to begin with are for the "hardcore" gamer market. Ninty have ALWAYS insisted that they are trying to appeal to a new market AS WELL AS continuing the cater for hardcore gamers.

Wii Sports, Tony Hawks etc. will be
Sorry, I took the "as well as" bit for granted.
Now take a few deep breaths....and relax.
