Just so you have prior notice I can link to when you welcome me back with cries of "you were gone?", I leave tomorrow afternoon and get back on September 1st. Cape Town, Vic Falls, Kruger National Park, Lake Kariba and more, plus far too much time spent in Johanesburg Airport in between everywhere else. \o/ Don't do anything drastic before I get back, and enjoy the geekmeet on the 18th! /is excited |
I'm off to Africa!

I was tempted to add a few extra "ca"s to the thread title, but decided against it. -

Registered 20 years agoZimbabwe should be fun.
They've been suffering from a little bit of hyperinflation. According to official figures, inflation rose from an annual rate of 32% in 1998 to a high of 1193.5% in May 2006. Puts the Bank of England base rate increase in perspective.gif)
The exchange rate over a similar timescale fell from 50 Zim Dollars to the pound to 1,000,000 Zimbabwe Dollars to the pound.
However, as of 6 days ago, they've knocked 3 zeros off the end, revalued the currency to 500 Zim$ to the pound, and issued a load of new banknotes. As the whole change has to be complete and the old notes worthless by the 21st of August, it'll be a bit chaotic right now. -

Here's a choice phrase to endear you to the Cape Town locals
"Jou Ma se poes"
That will get you noticed -

I'll give that one a miss, but I might give "Sit jou kop in die koei se kont en wag tot die bul jou kom holnaai" a try. -

Have a goodun, and remember - if you see any 2 metre long moggys, DO NOT attempt to make friends with a can of Felix and a friendly stroke.

Unfortunately not.
Virgin to/from Africa and South African Airways for internal flights. We'll be taking almost a whole day to travel from Vic Falls to Harare, normally a short flight on Air Zimbabwe, but as we didn't want to risk that we've got a massive detour via Jo'berg, plus 6 hours in Jo'berg airport before we fly up to Zimbabwe again.
How much would a flight on DB Airlines cost then?

Registered 16 years agoJust remember, when you're wasting time at Jo'burg Airport, do not leave the safety of the airport. Seriously. However, having spent many hours there myself, you will be pleased to know there's a good pub there.
Oh, and bring me back a Milo bar or two please. Pretty pretty please! -

We found an Irishy pub whilst waiting for our 747 to Cape Town, only 38rnd for soft drinks for 4.

When visiting Vic Falls stay in Livingstone; Zambia is much better than Zimbabwe, the people are friendlier, they actually welcome non-blacks, the economy is stable, it's generally safer, and there's a small safari park near vic falls which has all of the main animals apart from lions.
