Changing browser.sessionstore.interval to a stupidly high number will also reduce the issue. Also the good new ssd's have 5 year warrantys for high write values so that its not such an issue on them but still worth fixing it.

Where I worked last year, many of the PCs had just 2GB of RAM, and Win7 with Internet Explorer, which quickly gobbles 500MB of memory with a few tabs opened. On my previous workplace, we had Win2000 without antivirus software until 2011. Smart as I am, I once ordered something per credit card from there, shortly before some villains stole a few hundred quid from my account via my credit card number. Some people are just asking for trouble, including me it seems.

Funnily enough I mentioned Firefox at work earlier this week. What happened to it?

Which browsers do you guys use instead then?

I really like Firefox sync as a backup, and I especially love the way it handles multiple tabs compared with other browsers - I'm awful for having 100+ tabs open at a time

If you're using Firefox and you have an SSD, stop. The session storage writes to the drive constantly with around 10gb dumped a day. The drive will last a fraction of it's proper life.
The question that inevitably comes to my mind is does it do that also to a standard hard drive? I've been a FF user for decades. Never could find a better alternative. Hate Chrome, Opera became shit as they changed the engine. FF has the best extensions for me....

    This is interesting:

By default Electrolysis is disabled. To enable it, you have to do the following:

    Open Firefox
Enter about:config in the address bar
    Set browser.tabs.remote.autostart to true
    Set extensions.e10sBlockedByAddons to false
    Set extensions.e10sBlocksEnabling to false
    Restart Firefox

Once you've done that, you should notice a significant increase in performance (in both startup and page rendering), as well as stability and security. According to the developers, the page rendering gains for Electrolysis-enabled releases of Firefox could exceed over 700%. I have not officially benchmarked the gains, but real-world testing does clearly show that when Electrolysis is enabled, page rendering is not only seriously faster, it's also much smoother.
    And the article ends with:

Thanks to the new features (and the removal of old features), Firefox 49 might well be the release to breathe new life into the gasping open source browser. It's incredibly fast, smooth, reliable, and has just the right amount of features to make me seriously considering dropping Chrome in favor of the browser that had been my default for over a decade.

    Bravo, Mozilla.
Sounds really good tbh. I don't have an SSD so won't have the problem with the session caching mentioned by Db luckily

I've used FF for years now. Never heard of the SSD thing - a bit of a worry as I intend to build a new PC soon.

Chrome is much faster, and much easier on memory. It's also safer for extensions, as it has Android-like restrictions on certain functions that you have to agree with before installing. With Firefox extensions, you have to blindly trust them because they can basically do whatever they want.

As for MS browsers, there's a HUGE difference between IE and Edge. IE is terrible and as I said, consumes insane amounts of RAM. Clearly the worst internet browser around. But Edge is in the Chrome league, very fast and even easier on system memory. I'm talking less than 10% of IE memory usage, and less than 20% of FF memory usage. One of the best browsers right now (the best being Chrome and Edge, without serious competition).

The issue is because SSDs have a limited number of writes before they crap out.

Been using Firefox for years, don't like chrome; something just feels "off" with it although I can't quite pinpoint what.

I went back to FF from chrome after it became too resource intensive, dragging memory down with every tab. FF isn't brilliant for that but feels much more responsive once it has opened at least...

@DrStrangelove i dont use any extensions that arent ad/security related. Also running a browser of an ssd with fiber internet on a decent machine calling a browser faster is pretty much pointless as its all instantaneous. No matter how much better an ms browser is i wont be touching it, happy for others to use it but not me.

I like the developer tools and the history/password/bookmark sharing in FF, while Adblock Pro solved any performance issues by stopping all the silly Eurogamer adverts. When I tried Chrome that time that FF fell apart, it was too clunky for my tastes. Both IS and Edge have a strange way of randomly rendering fairly mainstream sites (e.g. BBC, Huffington Post) largely in italics. That last one I'd put down to something on my PC since no-one in the world would use an MS browser if that were the case for all users.

    I guess this will do.

So, FF 57 is out, a major overhaul. Apparently, it's better, faster and some other rs. For now all I see are square tabs. Does anyone still care or are we all firmly in Google's data mining pocket by now?

Updated FF on both work and personal laptops yesterday. Like it so far, seems slightly quicker as well. Extensions I use (only Ublock and HTTPS everywhere also kept working out of the box).

Fired up Firefox for the first time in yonks. It's considerably quicker on my ageing PC than Chrome. Not sure I like the look as much though
