I'm asking any important personages who might have had the pleasure of playing Zelda at E3 - or indeed personages who might have heard first hand from a trusted source - how bad were the Wii controls? Can they be fixed or is it a fundamental flaw. Also, were they bad? I heard that they were awkward. Nintendo decided to separate GC controls from the Wii build of Twilight Princess, so I need reassurance! What were those controls like? If they were piss poor with no hope of salvation, I'll be getting the GC build of the game. |
How bad were Zelda Wii controls?

Registered 17 years agoI'm wondering as well. As much as I want to try it out on the Wii i am tempted to go for the GC version. I'm hoping my sister picks it up on the GC so I can borrow hers and get the Wii version to try them both.
But tbh I think it's another stupid move by Nintendo, as much as I love them they do make it easy for people to moan at them.
How hard could it've been to just do one version that plays on both with a choice of control methods on the Wii? afaik the only other difference on the Wii version is it will be in w/s and possible 480p, both things that the cube can do anyway (though maybe not with out dropping the quality in the new game?). -

Registered 16 years agoWell if you're looking for optimism:
IGN Wii Mailbag
Hey, I was just wondering if the GameCube's version of Legend of Zelda will be inferior to the Wii's version in more ways than the graphics. If the GameCube version turns out to be sub par simply because the development team decided to devote its resources to the Wii I can't help but feel a little cheated. After all this game has been touted as the reason to hang onto your GameCube for the past couple of years. I'd appreciate any info/comments.
Thanks,
Jeff
Matt responds: I think that in the end the two versions will look and play very similarly. The GameCube build will turn out just fine. But honestly, you can bet that you're going to get the most bang for your buck with the Wii option. We already know it runs in 16:9 widescreen on Wii, which won't be an option on GameCube. But beyond that, once you learn the intricacies of moving Link about the world with the Wii controller, it starts to feel more intuitive than using the standard pad. This is particularly true during some of the fishing sequences. And all of this is based on only a brief amount of time with the E3 demo of the Wii version. I expect that once we get more time with the build, we're going to be further impressed.
Probably not the answer you're looking for, but think of it this way: you'll still be getting what is sure to be one of the best Zelda adventures of all time on GameCube. Nintendo never signed a contract with GCN owners. It could have just as easily pulled the GCN build altogether and made Twilight Princess a Wii exclusive. So when you look at it like that, I actually think it's pretty cool that the game is still headed to GameCube, despite the fact as an exclusive it could have more easily sold Wii systems.

They were terrible. Awful, even. Whenever I tried to make him do something that was out of the bounds of the controller, he'd turn at the screen, make a smug face and go "Well excuuuuuuuse me, Princess!", and after 30 or 40 times that shit got tiring so I kept running him into walls, but the wiimote clearly sensed this and started pulsing angrily. I threw it away due to some innate sense that I needed to, and it landed on the ice and grew the Fortress of Solitude. I went inside and saw Edward Woodward stood menacingly, so we circled for a while. Luckily I knew how to make gunpowder, and there was a tube nearby with a rock, so I managed to slay him with my makeshift bazooka. Santa praised me for my actions and told me that Edward Woodward had been holding him captive inside the wiimote for 300 years, and now he was freed and could continue his quest to destroy the children of the world, and I was like "Fuck, we were wrong about Santa all this time", 'cause Edward was part of an underground society which held itself as the saviour of innocent children against Santa. So anyway, I went mano-a-mano with that redsuited fuck, but he was too powerful so I retreated to regather my strength.
So yeah, the controls sucked. -

Registered 18 years agoThe thing is though, at E3 your thrown into the middel of the game, get a couple minuts to learn the controls and are expected to be able to handel it all.
Not exactly a good way to experience the game as in normal play you slowely learn the different weapons and moves, gradually increasing the difficulty.

Registered 15 years agoI suppose it'd be worth while getting Zelda Wii even if the controls are tricky, after all, that's kinda the point isn't it! To play something new. Still, they'd want to be at least workable... -

FYI, Professor Lesser is hyper-critical of all Metroid intellectual properties. -

I would say there's a 50-50 split on favour for the Hunters controls - in my mind, that's an overwhelming failure on Nintendo's part.

Registered 17 years agoNo one can truly comment on the Wii controls until they've sat down with the recent dev kits and had a go.
we all know the e3 kits had the old white controller with a dodgy sensor bar.
The wii option will be just fine, people are scared of a change. I'm sure if you don't like it, take it back and explain the "confusion" and plug the cube pad into the Wii console, job done. -

Registered 17 years agoIt seems doubtful that Nintendo will get the control of a game wrong, as this is the area they always excell in.
A brand new controller will always take some time to get used to anyway. The N64 controller for an obvious example.
Although it would be unfair of me to say E3 isn't a massive insight into a game, you never know what it's going to be like until it hits the shops. -
If you're worried, just buy the Cube version. -
Or both ;o) -
Yes. Buy both.

I think the reference was 'Arena' from TOS, rather than 'Darmok' from TNG.

I thought it was a McGyver reference.

Yes, quite correct. Normally wouldn't worry about it, but this is Zelda. I'd have felt a lot safer knowing that the old-school control scheme would be in there as well. They already programmed it FFS. It'll have taken them some effort to remove GC control from the Wii version. -

I want widescreen. I also want new controls. I only wanted GC control for back-up.

My biggest concern is - how much extra stuff they put into the Wii version? ... if i buy the GC version. -

I read somewhere that you will get one extra dungeon on the Wii. -

+1
Can we save the laments that there's no GC control option in the Wii version until we've had a chance to find out if the controls are borked or not?
