I've not seen anything other than a few clips of the ends of fights, plus I'm well aware Jon Jones at this point is a combination of Hitler and Skeletor but aren't those finishing punches to the back of the head?

I've never fully worked out how that rule can get applied properly. Same with the downed opponent bullshit

    I love Nunes’s loose style- a bit Chuck Liddell-ish.

There were definitely blows to the back of Gus’s head. I guess it wouldn’t have made much difference if it had been stood up and a point taken though sadly.

Can’t beliwvw we’ve got to listen to that twat crowing and praising Jesus and with little to no prospect of that shit eating grin being beaten off him any time soon.

The danger zone with strikes to the back of the head is the “Mohawk” area, but those ground strikes were behind the back of the ear so I think there’s nothing illegal about ‘em.

One of the confusing things about the rule is that definition I believe depends on which state athletic commission governs the fight.

It's a really difficult rule to govern and enforce. I once asked a guy who I worked with who fights (MMA in different countries as well as kickboxing) how you can possibly remember the applicable flavors of rules halfway through a fight, and he laughed and just said "fuck it; refs problem"

There are so many confusing rules like that. I still have no idea when a fighter is considered grounded these days as it changes depending on where the fight takes place.

In other juicy news, Chad Mendes has retired.

Mendes got cocky and tried to get on the knockout highlight reel.

He did just not how he hoped

That's a great card barring Sanchez fighting again.

Fucking hell Sanchez is still active? Didn't he win TUF 1?

I am hyped to see Askren fighting in the UFC. Dude's barely had a punch landed on him in several years.

I am fully expecting him to be the UFC's new blanket.

Genuinely pumped that in 2019 we might get to see Askren vs Khabib for the Blanketweight strap.

I think I must be one of the few people who isn't that impressed with Askren. Good wrestler, yes, but his stand up game is kind of terrible and he doesn't dominate fights the people say he does. His best win is against an over the hill Aoki, who was moving up a weight class.

Khabib really isn't a blanket though is he, he brutalises opponents after taking them down (although he does struggle for finishes sometimes). Askren often just dominates position with little else.

I feel like Dana's vision for Askren is going to be to keep matching him up with fighters who might, just might punch his face in.

Aspen Ladd sounds like she should be in the 3:15 at Newmarket.

How much of a jump or not in quality is the UFC from ONE? Is Askren in deep shit you think and about to get found out?

Talks a lot of shit online but I like his style and in the fights I’ve seen he looks very dominant. But you look at an Askren fight in comparison with a Khabib fight and there’s a night and day difference in quality (and aggression!) to me.

But I’m new to the sport so fuck knows. Is he coming from a joke of a division?

ONE isn't a joke of a company, but the best fighters in Askren's division are all in the UFC right now. There's real depth of talent in 155 right now, not just Khabib and Connor. So Askren will need to climb a very tough ladder to prove himself, but if he does, and he lifts the belts, then fair play to him.

And P4P, Khabib is a league above most MMA fighters in the world.

    Doesn't Askren fight at 170?

I just noticed it says "A Champion may have more than one belt only if they hold titles in more than one division". So I guess they now take the very belt they won all the way through their reign rather than getting a new belt with each win?

Now that the belts don't represent the money fights I guess they need to cut down on extravagance. Expected a Reebok logo on it

Didn't mighty mouse say that was basically what they did with him anyways?

Yes, but it was just another way in which the UFC treated him worse than everyone else. Literally every other champ got a new belt with each win, DC for example has posted photos of his many UFC belts. Because some champs have so many they are often given away, I suppose that will stop now.
