Any recommendation of an ebook reader for a first time buyer/user? I'll just be using it on the train/at home near a lamp, and only want it purely for books. I was looking at the entry level £60 Kindle, as the store seems to be cheaper, but don't think you can rent out library ebooks on a Kindle in the UK can you? |

Registered 18 years agoPaperwhite at minimum. The lit screen is an absolute godsend, make it an infinitely more useable device.

I'd be reading it next to a small bedside lamp or on the train...would I really need the paperwhite for that usage? -

Registered 17 years agoI went for the basic kindle when I had one for my birthday based on the logic of "can I read a book in the dark?". That saved £50 to spend on something else. -

Registered 7 years ago@kentmonkey you wouldn't need that lamp on and also the paperwhite light is much more readable then a lamp on one in my experience. -

Registered 18 years agoI agree. And it'll lessen arguments about how long you're reading for etc. -

Registered 18 years agoDefinitely worth the premium imo. Most new gadgets are, let's face it, usually just sleeker faster iterations of what we had before*. The Paperwhite is loads better and much more versatile than its cheaper incarnations.
*owns a Voyage, love it dearly, but case in point

Registered 16 years agoI use the basic kindle for commuting and it works a treat. Plus at only 50 quid I've had no worries about just throwing it in my bag and have it bounce around. Not so sure I'd be so keen with its more expensive big brothers. -

Registered 12 years agoI'd say the Paperwhite is probably worth it, but it depends how often you're likely to be reading in bed and whether doing so causes any arguments. I read most nights and if the missus wants the lights out there's no way I can read a paperback, it has to be the Kindle. -

Registered 7 years agoLet's not forget that using the paperwhite in daylight is also marvellous. The sun really brings our the screen when the brightness if up. -

Might wait for someone to pick one up in the states for me. -
Paperwhite Shmaperwhite. Once you've seen/used a Voyage with its flush screen and much more pleaseant haptics, there's no going back. -

Registered 15 years agoI'm not a fan of the Voyage. I actually really dislike the form factor. -
You mean the angular backside? Because they're pretty similar from the front, the Voyage only has a smaller bezel, and is a bit thinner. -

Registered 18 years agoI love the Voyage, it's an absolute delight. The flush screen is my favorite part as it prevents dust, moisture, etc from getting stuck in the recessed area between the bezel and screen and makes the screen easier to wipe clean.
It'll only get better when the Bookerly font update appears. Was disappointed to discover that the better justification isn't retroactive though, it'll only apply to reformatted ebooks. Probably be the lions share eventually, but it's kind of like learning of backwards compatibility of select titles only. -

Don't know if you've ever used a Voyage, but I find the difference to the PW (which I used for 18 months or so) pretty enormous. It's a bit like going from one of those cheap Dell plastic laptops to a Macbook. Or a Zenbook. Well, not quite maybe, but similar. -

Registered 13 years agoI'm currently considering upgrading my Kindle keyboard to something new.
I had a look at the voyage and it's impressive but I think it's just a bit much, unless anyone has some good reasons why I should go for that.
So I'm looking at the new paperwhite, but I went into my local WHSmiths to look at Kobo's, they had the Kobo Aura for £79 or the Glo HD for £109.
Should I stick with a Kindle? How difficult would it be to move all my books to a Kobo (I'm guessing it's fairly straight forward with Calibre or something).
If not the Kindle does anyone have any experience the 2 Kobo models I have mentioned and any recommendations on either of those. -

Registered 16 years agoI just upgraded from a keyboard to the new paperwhite and it's great. I'm invested in the Amazon ecosystem so never even looked at Kobos, but I'm very happy with it so far. -

Registered 7 years agoThere's no real reason to get a kobo, they're nice but kindles do everything they do and are at least as good. -

Registered 13 years agoI did like that fact the Kobo had the flush screen, but apart from that I can't really think of a good reason not to get a Kindle.
I just need to justify 120 plus a case when I already have a perfectly working, if slightly old Kindle. It's a tough life -

I bought Mrs Hermit a Voyage for her birthday a couple of months ago as an upgrade from the Keyboard. It's a lovely bit of kit. I'm hoping the prices will drop around Christmas so I can upgrade as well.
