The last time I was in Cannes Sylvester Stallone was cruising up and down the shore in his speedboat waving to everyone. Its definitely surreal.

I'd have preferred him over those Instagram wankers, that's for sure.

It seems as if she got the trail end of a month long block party where we're staying in Lisbon.

Food and beer and wine and sangria everywhere for five or six tiny, maze like blocks in Alfama.

Dancing in the streets and that sorry if thing. It's also sardine season and everyone is eating mountains of coal grilled salted fish.

People have set up small bars/restaurants in their main door. Just opened it up and set a small table across the opening, hawking cherry schnapps, samosas or even toilet visits.

The aquarium was legendary (and I don't even like aquariums) and people are friendly and relaxed.

So not heatwave hot in Nice but still 30+. And very humid.

Only poncy motors I've seen have had Monte Carlo plates, so will be disappointed if not Bond villain levels of car porn in Monaco.

Just booked a week in Mexico city for next year. Should be quite different to my usual trips. :)

Living here since last May, you picked a great spot. If you're looking for any recommendations feel free to reach out.

    For a brief overview:
The traffic is absolutely terrible, I've never been to LA but a lot of people from work compare it to there. The city is enormous and depending where you're staying, weather and the time of day you head out at, it can take up to 1hr for something that would take 20 mins with clear roads/skies.

That said, Uber here is outrageously cheap. Like $9 for an hour long ride cheap. As is the metro for that matter but it's a bit dangerous in certain parts of the city like any other big metro.

The food is absolutely incredible. From tacos to pizza to sushi some of the best of it I've had has been in this city, and it's all so inexpensive too. Starters and sushi for 2 and a bottle of sake and tip for

Oh, and if anyone he's been to Tokyo and has a hotel recommendation, that would be cool.

I'm putting a massive "shortlist" together as I'm doing the Olympics next year, and even getting a hotel is going to be quite the feat.

Use AirBnB, much better value in Tokyo.

I always went super low budget in Tokyo with capsule hotels and the like so probably not much help to you (and the main one closed a few years ago I think). During Olympic time it might be even more challenging. There are hostels too but only used them once as I prefer my own (capsule sized at times) space. I can give better hotel recommendations in Osaka as that is 'my' city

Probably not during the Olympics. Some of the places I've been watching have gone from 3,000 for two weeks to more like 12,000.

Plus I'll be spending too much money on tickets to risk getting fucked over by something going wrong and being left with no accommodation at all a couple of weeks before the event.

...and finally, virtually none of them have gyms, which I'l need. :p

I've pulled a couple of emergency options like that, but I'm travelling with my wife, and that's not really our scene. :)

    Aha....
Last time in Tokyo I stayed here, nothing amazing but great location to go anywhere in Tokyo and (by Japanese standards) big rooms and good value.

No probs, if struggling, you could also consider staying in Yokohama, it's only 20-25 mins on the train and a cool city too.

In Tokyo, it makes sense to stay close to a station on the Yamamote Line, as described here.

I imagine getting into Tokyo during the event will be an absolute nightmare, but I'll give it some consideration.

@Psychotext I still went low budget with wife and son when I took them, albeit not capsules ;). I have never seen the point of overpaying for a place you use as luggage storage and somewhere to spend most of your time in asleep. I spend that money saved on the rest of the trips :). Tried a four star suite in Bangkok once and it felt like a waste (was still cheap though) as I only used the bed and bathroom.

That 3,000 for two weeks default price mentioned for the airbnb is a horrifying price to me never mind the inflated price. I imagine the sooner you book the better for Olympic time though. No idea what hotels have gyms as again I don't use hotels as places to spend non sleeping time in.

Yeah, I see the argument and I've gone both ways.

Generally the longer I'm spending somewhere, the better hotel I'll be going for. If nothing else, the beds are usually better, and the rooms quieter.

Irrelevant if you sleep like a log, but I definitely don't.

    Plus, overpaying is relative. :D

Kyushu, will spend the whole month there (save for a few days in Hong Kong on the way back). Will visit the islands of Yakushima and Amamioshima hopefully, trying to sort a itinerary out but so many places look great!

@Armoured_Bear How do you get so much time off, you seem to be travelling a lot throughout the year? Some sort of regular sabbatical arrangement with work or self-employed? Just curious.

By default I have 30 days per year but can "buy" 1, 2 or 3 extra weeks and per week, 2% is deducted from my salary each month. For the last few years I've opted for 2 extra weeks so have 8 weeks per year plus public holidays. I only use my days for actually going on holiday so can usually stretch it quite far.
A couple of times per year I have to work the weekend and take the time later so that helps with weekends away.

Basically I'm pretty lucky with a flexible system at work.

It is, but I still think I would be using cheap hotels even if I was a millionaire. When I had a Hokkaido package booked (when I was loving in Kansai) I was shocked that the hotel I basically got for free (package cost was about the same as flight only cost at the time) was fairly fancy. Still had no qualms about going back budget afterwards though.

I don't backpack it as I like my own room ideally (only in Japan are capsules another valid option). I can still manage to spend a fortune in Japan on everything else ;). Shared hostel rooms are only used as an emergency option.

Sadly these days I can't even afford the holidays so cost of hotels is a bit moot.
