I’m having a weekend in Iceland. I think I might have found my place. I really really like it here. |

I haven't heard a bad word from anyone that's been there. Is it as expensive as made out to be?

Registered 15 years agoSome things are expensive, others not. Staying in a stunning huge air bnb for £70 right on the harbour. Energy is basically free and 100% green. Food isn’t cheap but all the meat is from Iceland, even in fast food places. Alcohol is expensive but it doesn’t bother me.
It’s astonishingly beautiful and quiet and the people are amazing. I’m completely blissed out. It’s just so so nice.
Can’t see the Northern Lights in Reykjavik where we are but you can do trips to see them. I’ve seen them before so am not bothering. -

That said, I'd love to go back and explore the rest of the country. -

Registered 12 years agoOh God I love asia.
A week in phuket staying with a friend and it is heaven. I am working 10 hours a day, but feel more relaxed than I ever have. Living in an all thai complex away from all the tourist shit, it is costing me maybe £10 a day, and most of that is petrol as i explore the island on a bike.
It really is heaven out here, friendly people, cheap food and the weather is perfect. 5 weeks this trip, but 2021 i have to move out here, i always forget how depressed Nd miserable i am in the uk. Here depression has gone, I haven't taken my asthma inhaler in 5 days (in uk I take daily) and I am happy and relaxed.
Last night did first big night, my birthday so headed patong to get a few beers, and even that I loved when I usually hate it. Full of hookers and drunk Aussies, but managed to find a little bar to play pool, met some Americans and played pool till 4am.
Tuesday off to Saigon, then Ha Phong, Hanoi, Hoi An and Komodo. -

Registered 3 years agoBe careful, you can go somewhere on holiday once or twice, like it and move there and then twenty years later they vote for Brexit and you have to go back home broken hearted -

Registered 9 years agoDoes anyone else have serious accent cringe when they come back after lengthy stints overseas?
I got back about a month ago, having spent about 6 months on assignment with very little exposure to Australian people. The night I got back I listened to a news report, and all I could think was "...Jesus, do we really talk like that? Fucking hell." -

Depressingly true. But I could get 100× the salary in uk and still be unhappy. I need the sun. In london when bored there is the pub or the cinema. In asia you can sit outside with a book, or walk in the sun.

I miss south africa loads, but the crime is just too much, out here you can relax and have the hot weather. -

Registered 15 years agoI’m pretty sure there’s plenty of Asian people earning peanuts who are miserable that walking or sitting in the sun reading a book are their only options -

I actually know quite a few. Spent a fair bit of time in Isaan with my mates wife family. They earn fuck all and live in a village with no running water etc. I am not going to pretend they are happy etc, but they do seem happier than the uk poor. The outlook is different, not sure if it is a Buddhist or cultural thing. Obviously india and cambodia are different, there you see misery.

Also I am fully aware of my privilege, the fact I can consider a move like this makes me in the 1% and I am aware how blessed my life is in this respect. -

Registered 12 years agoA new scam for me in saigon. Got taxi from the airport, I know should be around 150,000. I have done this enough times so got meter fair etc. Got to destination and the guy said 800,000. I looked at the meter and very cleverly he had painted over the final digit, so instead of seeing 1790 it displayed 790 and he was trying to convince me that meant 800,000. I offered him 200,000 and he started haggling so I dropped to 150, then when he got angry saying okay 500 is fair I dropped to 130, gave it to him and walked off.
Really fucks me off, I always leave large tips and would happily have paid 250 if he had done proper price or even tried to graft me for double. But when they start trying to do 5 times the price I get really offended.
I have to admire the ingenuity of it though. -

Registered 9 years agoI haven't been to Vietnam since 7 years ago and loved it, I'd like to go back to wonder how much that kind of shit would piss me off now. I have much less patience for that kind of thing as I get older, think that's why I keep going back to Japan -
