I think a lot of there recent offerings are aimed at attracting some higher stakes players onto the site. Us plebs are not where the money is made.

I just loaded up the client for the first time in a while. Where have all the players come from? I know they count the free tables as online players so the majority can probably be excluded but they have 2700 online at the moment. Last time I was playing on there there were around 700 at this time of night.

They must be doing something right

2700? That's pretty good. Nowhere near the 20-30k plus that I'm looking for, but getting there. Keep it going Jez!

My football got called off today. waterlogged pitch. Really up for going to play live in the local casino tonight now I have the spare time. Never been before but from what I hear they always get over 100 people for their tournies. Think it's a £10 buy in although it's a rebuy I think so could end up quite costly. Still I guess if I think of it as a night out then if/when I come away with nothing it won't be so bad. I guess if they don't have any tournies I can join a cash game as long as it's not too high stakes.

Those freerolls are good for a free bit of cash and a bit of fun but they don't pay much at all. well done on finishing 2nd though! better finish than I have ever had in anything.

I did end up going and trying out live poker for the first time (only just got back so I guess you can tell how i did!). It was a £10 rebuy tournie (no fee), with a 90 minute rebuy period and 45 blind level leading to 20 minute levels after the rebuy period was over. 55 entrants started at 19:30. Prize pool of just over £2k after the rebuying was over. It was really fun. They provide free soft drinks and sandwich's and there was even a free hot buffet during the break. All very odd considering the house wasn't getting a penny off me. I guess their plan is you get bored before it starts and if you get knocked out early and you have gone as a group and have to wait for others to finish, then you will lose all your money on the mugs casino games while they have you in the building. Didn't work on me though just took all the freebies and didn't gamble a penny.

I didn't have to rebuy once although I did take the add on at the break so I invested £20. Made the final table, down to 8 players and I had 2.3k chips with a 3k big blind. Managed to quadrouple up on the hand by both blinds and an extra calling my decent hand when I was under the gun (can't remember what it was). Managed to stay alive and get back in it. Got down to the final 5 and the blinds were 4k/8k. got to 2am and everyone got fed up and agreed a deal of £300 each and the spare cash to the winner. Went out about 2 hands later by going all in with naff all as I wanted to get home. Only to find I couldn't and had to wait for the game to finish as deals are an agreement between players and the casino still pays the correct prize structure regardless.

Had to give a £10 tip out of my winnings (which was on the light side I think and probably didn't even cover all the free food and drink I had over the 6 1/2 hours) so I came home up £270 and a fifth place finish. Not bad for my first live game. Some of the play was shocking I have to say. so many people with bottom pair calling all ins!

On the 2nd of february they have a 1p buy in £1000 gauranteed tournie with a max 165 entrants??? Will make and effort to try and be free to go to that one! Has free drinks, snacks and buffet still even with that buy in!

Fantastic stuff Haystax! Not bad considering you think you're a bit rubbish at MTTs (or was that somebody else?!) Obviously not! 55 entrants, I'd fancy myself in that sort of field. What casino was that? Bet it was a bit intimidating to start with!

Interesting that they didn't take a fee, even though they have a gambling licence....

I've only played a live game once. Finished 8th. Was a £10 entry with a £1 house fee. That was at a proper casino.

    Free coffee as well!! Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

    Won £110.

Cheers Dougs. It was at Star city Birmingham. Supposedly the biggest casino in the UK at the moment. I was expecting a big fee like £5 on a £10 buy in or something like that. Some other players told me a lot of other places do charge a fee and don't provide dealers either. Bit strange to pay a tournie director and 5 dealers and not take any money and then provide a free hot buffet on top during the break. Guess it shows how much money they make on all the other stuff they have there they hope you will go on.

Yeah at the start I didn't really know what I was doing. You can barely see the numbers on the chips, there not printed on just slightly indented into the chip. It was quite intimidating fumbling around with my chips trying to work out bet sizes to begin with. Soon got used to it though although I made quite a few mistakes over the whole night. Said all in but put my cards over the line so it was a fold. Didn't say raise before putting my chips in so it counted as a call and had to take the spare back. That kind of thing.

Quite a mix of old timer live players and the young internet players.

What's everyone been up to last few days, everyone having a bad run or something?

Made a last minute decision to go to Star City again for the £10 rebuy tournie. Just got back.... came 1st! 58 players, started on 1k, had 12k by the end of the 90 minute rebuy period with no rebuys or add on taken. Got to the final table as chip leader with around 35k . Almost got knocked out with 6 left. made it to final 3 and took a deal for £400 each and winner gets extra £195. Went all in every hand after that and won with 64 off against K 8 suited. Got my name and photo up on the winners gallery now on the massive projection screen for the next 6 days.

After last weeks deal of £300 finishing 5th and this weeks deal and 1st place finish, that puts my 8 day old live game career winnings at £895 with a £30 investment and £50 in tips making a £845 profit. Maybe I'm not so bad at MTT's after all!

Apparently wednesday and thursday nights are the most popular and they get over 100 players on these nights. A lot of decent players so I here on those nights. Might have to give them a try, although been told it usually runs till around 4am!

Fantastic! Not bad going at all Haystax. £50 in tips eh....I take it only those who place are expected to give some cash?!

Not played a huge amount, been trying out the cash games more than anything. Prob about $30 up, but I really am rubbish at them. I get embroiled in pots I've got no right to be in. Got lucky the other day though, was on the phone and picked up KK. Re-raised, then got re-raised again and ended up moving all in pre-flop. Not a wise idea....esp when the flop came down QAA! My kings held up and I doubled through, god knows what he had.

Just about to play a game now...

Oh my fucking god. Just qualified for the Sunday Million over at PokerStars. From a $5+rebuy tourney. Only took one add-on at the break, didn't need it otherwise. 210 entrants, and top 7 qualified. Took 4.5 hours. The last hour or so was the fianl table. The guy that finished on the bubble has to be gutted, he was shortstacked and was put all-in with AT vs KT (chip leader). A on the flop looked to prolong the agony until the chip leader caught 2 diamond runners to give him the flush.

So excited, I'm shaking. Silly really, as there will be over 1500 entrants and I'll probably dip out after 30 mins or something! Still, not bad from $10! No doubt the missus will think we should have preferred the $530 entry fee....!

    Congrats to you both.

What's the format of the Sundaty Million, Dougs? I would have thought it would be deep stack and slow blinds for that size buy-in.
  • Deleted user 28 January 2007 19:33:34
Well done Dougs! hopefully you will have a long night of play ahead!

RE tips. Yeah the people who make the deal and take the big money pay a tip. Goes to the people serving the food and drink as they could have earn loads in tips if they had been on another section apparently. Supposed to leave about £50 between you but then this week the other 2 barely left anything so I made up the difference seen as I won the most.

Yeah, I would have thought so. No idea though, only went for is on an impulse. Because it starts and ends so late, I've not normally bothered.

    2 hours (ish) to go....!

Edit: Interestingly, PS give you the opeion to unregister from the tourney, and they credit your account with %530 tournament dollars with can be used to play further games. You can't withdraw, but handy if you can't make the Million.

And its, 10k starting stack, blinds at 25/50 with 20 min levels. Looking like Top 180 paid at the mo.

Most of the 10K stack tourneys are fixed length sessions over two or more days, aren't they? I look forward to hearing about it.

Actually you can withdraw the dollars but you don't get 100% of the value.

Yeah, they've been known to run and run, with European players missing work etc, which is why they introduced a Sunday Warm up ($250k) which starts at a more reasonable time.

We're off. 2768 players, top 414 paid. Gulp!

OK, made it to the 1st break pretty much in tact. Took a huge hit with AA early on, some guy wouldn't lay down his cards and got to the river with straight and flush possibilities and he put me all in. I laid them down, which was very hard to do!

Managed to double through though and am now just about the average. 500 people gone already.

Made it to the 2nd break, but virtually out. Made a silly call with a low straight, daft - should have thought about the higher straight. Oh well, never mind! 1200 left, so not a disgraceful performance if I do go soon.

Edit: Finished 1137. Would have liked to have got closed to the cash, but was never really above my starting stack. Probably played some hands a bit too tentatively, got caught up in hands that I shouldn't have really and then made some bad calls. Confident I can place if I qualify again though.

    Sleep beckons!

What was the play-style like, Dougs? Were there still a lot of early all-ins or were people generally more cautious than the average $5-10 MTT crowd?

I've been giving PKR a spin recently. Quite like it, although the pace is a bit slower.

So what nicks you guys use, can I add you to my friends list while you're offline?

Aggressive, but only when you'd expect people to be (i.e. in position). As it was deep stacked, few all-ins to start with - certainly not like over the PR. More importantly, my raises were also respected, none of this coming over the top of you all in with a weak drawing hand etc.

As I say, I reckon I could place if I qualify again, no reason why others shouldn't, given our relative successes. It is a bit intimidating at first but now I know what to expect, I think we've all got a good chance. Be prepared for a long night though!

Jetset - nick is Dougsey I think. Not played there for a while. What's the average online these days?

I still intend to join PokerStars when I get another cashout to stake it, but I didn't play half as much in January and I've been having a crappy run in MTTs too. It's not as if I'm playing badly, I just can't get the last jump or two into the money. This week alone I've gone out within 20 places of the bubble in the 12K rebuy on PR (without rebuying or adding myself) three times. Set over set, QQs running to a set over AA, I seem to be attracting it all. Frustrating, especially when it takes 2-3 hours to get that far.

Those 12k re-buys are utter carnage. I've given up, everything is turned into a race. BillysBones (an EGer) was on one table the other week and said the guy must have rebought 20 odd times. Every hand was an all-in. I can only assume it was a tactic that had worked in the past and he wanted to get chips quickly before the freeze out. Bonkers.

Interestingly, the Sunday Million has been a $215 buy in the last 2 weeks. 5700 entered last weeks!

I suspect that you're right. I commonly have gone from 1500 to around 10000 chips by the first break but still find myself only in 150+ position because of the re-buy and all-in brigade. After that, because the chip-counts are so high, the crowd doesn't clear quickly enough and the blinds hit 1000-2000 before the bubble, which means that unless you manage to at least double again, you won't make it.

In contrast, playing the non-rebuys and getting a single double in the first hour normally allows you to simply play survival through the bubble if you like.

Indeed, which is what I tend to do. Currently trying to up my cash game. Was going well with some free cash that PP gave me as I hadn't logged in for a while. Got $15 up to over $40 on the .10/.25 blinds. Just blown that though after taking a huge hit with a silly call. Ah well, didn't cost me anything.

Going to try and qual for the Sunday Million tomorrow, bit worried about the number of entrants though!

Damn, I finally get some decent poker time and I play like an arse. In a bad run at the mo. Need something to turn things round. It might be the wine that is causing me probs at the mo though!
