dont mean to keep this fiery thread afloat but i just checked my play.com order for me wii.

games are now £32.99 h'apparently. So a wii, 3 games (zelda, monkeyball, wiisports) and an extra wiimote =£270

and compared to the launch price of 360 with one wireless controller and no games £280, and considering the games were £50 each...

also anyone else noticed this games price change?

Yes, I posted about it a couple of days ago in the Wii Pre-order thread :-)

Considering we are meant to be comparing like with like you have to compare prices and packages when the Wii comes out, you can't compare to 360 launch prices based on the context of the original argument.

Anyway there was a little truth in the original post. However the difference in the cost of games was also missed (£50 RRP vs £40 RRP).

well if its like for like

£180 for a wii on launch with a game and wireless controller

£280 for 360 on launch with wireless controller

while u cud argue the premium 360 came with a hard drive, u cud also argue that the wii is wireless out of the box, with no need to purchase an extra peripheral

and even more like for like-ing

wii with 4 games and two controllers £280 (play.com, with wiiplay/remote)

    360 with 1 game 2 controllers £280

but as mentioned before this is a dang silly comparison, like comparing biscuits and stadiums

You should know that such reasonable arguements have no place on UKgamer!

And I reckon by Christmas 2007 it will be about £99.99 with a whole bundle of games, controllers, cables, and stuff.

The biggest mistake NOE made with the Gamecube was not to bundle the console with games. It was actually Argos who set the ball rolling reducing the Cube to £99. Then Game and the like followed suit and offered bundles with crap titles like the Legends of Wrestling and Wolverine. When little Tommy booted up the Cube for the first time his reaction was "This is shit; the PS2 has better graphics." Poor PS2 ports of bad games don't sell consoles; obviously Game thought that the new Gamecube adopters would return to their store and buy first party Nintendo titles.

Sadly the Gamecube ended up neglected by Developers, High Street Chains and Publishers; even when a Cube title worth purchasing came out the distributors fucked up.

The Nintendo Wii could easily follow in the Cube’s footsteps; a record braking launch followed by very little or no software support. No gamer will be committed to the 1 console; most will have a 360 or PS3 for multi-format releases. For the Wii to take custom from their rivals the playability on the Wii-mote will have to be something special. I would buy a title like Tiger Woods if the Wii game-play compensated for the lack of pretty graphics; if the graphics and control is shit then the Wii will die an early death.

The comparison has to be one people would do in the shop *now*. They aren't going to think back to what the price was of the X360 last year and consider the Wii a better bargain because it compares more favorably with that. That's just madness.

wii with 4 games and two controllers £280 (play.com, with wiiplay/remote)

That's a better comparison, and I agree it's a bit of a silly one - but it is one parents are going to make. In these cases I think the price of games will come into the equation a lot more, parents will see this more than blinker eyed kids :-).

    yep.
    that is still a concern.
But hopefully (as I think Madden Wii is proving) 3rd party games can still look good enough (check the video on IGN it is quite nice!) and be different enough, with a splendid new control scheme, to warrant a purchase.

Nonsense, % of console owners with more than one console of the same gen = very small
Codswallop, the majority of gamers on Eurogamer have 1 or more consoles from the last generation many have all 3 including the Dreamcast.

I suppose the average man in the street can't look beyond the PS2; a new console would mean getting used to new controllers etc. This is too much trouble for a man with only 1 brain cell. :)

Of course, if this turns out to be true... £250 for a premium 360 and 4 games is not to be sniffed at ;-)

Well, that and having pretty much a 1 year headstart means they can be in the "first price-drop" stage as the Wii and PS3 are readying to launch ;-)
