I listen to a bit of radio, I watch a couple of documentaries a month- which it does better than Sky etc ever could- and, some CBBC aside, that's genuinely it. I don't consider it fantastic value for money but I do see the value in it as a service to the nation, many of whom probably use it a lot more than me.
That said, it does feel a touch old fashioned and rigid. A bit more flexibility via, say, a license for just radio listening or some sort of starter TV for grannies / full service option etc would offer more choice in line with how we're increasingly buying our entertainment.

I really don't find it great value for money, the last thing I watched on the BBC was The night manager. While it was great, there has been nothing else to watch. If other people find it "great value for money" then good for them but other people shouldn't be forced to pay for services they don't use. Also when you read about how the BBC wasted nearly £100 million on some digital media project, you think the licence fee should be scrapped.

While this link is 2 years old now, some of the troughing from the piggies at the top is quite disgusting

Don't worry, they will rethink things, the Government like your money. If everybody switches to online streaming... say hello to the online streaming license.

Iplayer is cool, but I think they could have been more inventive in its use, buy letting ex-pats have access to it for a low cost Netflix style fee, while keeping it free within the U.K. Instead, many ex-pats are blocked from using it, so it could be making more for them than it is. Bringing iplayer under the license now, backwardly reduces that possibility. They should still think about offering an ex-pat iplayer account, though. The numbers for stuff like Eurovision, could give them a nice boost. Think of those aussie dollars, you are missing out on, BBC. (If this happened, maybe our fees could for once go down, than up)
I can practically guarantee you, the argument against that, in the BBC, is that will cause conflicts with their attempts to sell BBC shows to other international networks; much easier to only have one contract to cover a whole country, rather than having to set up user accounts/management and taking piecemeal payments from the people who actually want to use the service...

In terms of licence fee, that's all it applies to doesn't it?

Radio, iPlayer catch up (for the moment), websites - don't need licence fee to use them.
Actually, radio used to require a license to own/listen to, it was only when TV became the dominant form of entertainment that it was phased out. With the internet, they've decided to have their cake and eat it.

OMFG... apparently they've opened up an investigation against me, I could potentially be fined up to £1,000!

    * bin *

They really are a bunch of fucking wankers. Their letters are deliberately designed to scare people into buying a licence that they don't need.

I've always preferred the Good Food site over the other one anyway. Was worried at first as I thought it was that one that was going.

Let's face it, Sky or Netflix aren't going to let Rick Wakeman make documentaries about concept albums are they?

This! The BBC is fantastic and I hope they find a way to ban people from iPlayer and the BBC news website if they don't pay.

Every time this thread gets bumped, I want to answer with something like this:

Left a bit! Left a bit! Ooh, you've gone too far.

Put the beeb news site behind a paywall and people will just go elsewhere for the news. Even The Sun, the second trashiest piece of shit in the universe (second only to the Daily Mail) backed down on that.

Especially when you end up in the odd scenario of people outside the UK getting all BBC News web content for free with adverts, but inside actual Britain you're blocked by default.

Its really not though is it, especially the sport coverage id love to be their head of sports broadcasting. You could go on holiday for most of the year, what have they got left excluding Wimbledon?

Who will go elsewhere? People who don't pay, that's who.

People who pay the license fee will continue to use it.

With Now TV, can you watch live TV? And if so, I'm guessing BBC channels are not available (at least they aren't through Sky Go).

If that's the case, does it not seem a bit odd making you pay a TV Licence to watch non-BBC channels live that you're already paying for via Sky?

People currently paying the license fee doesn't directly equate to people continuing to pay the license fee if there are extra hurdles to prove you're paying it.
