...having now seen the water temple boss it’s very clear that it’s a massive nod to SotC. I thought it was interesting to see Nintendo reference a Sony game so closely myself. Anyone else think this? To answer this then, no I didn't. It's not the first time I've used a hookshot/clawshot/grapple in a Zelda game to attach to a boss weak spot and then hit it. So, no - it didn't scream SotC to me just because I was on the actual boss when doing the hitting. |

Having not played SotC (and so not really being able to comment, but going to anyway) it seemed to me that all the bosses followed in the Zelda manner. But Shirley there's only so many ways you can do the 'screen-filling bosses vs adventurer' thing.
But anways, might have to pick up a PS2 with SotC it seems... -
Anyone picking up SotC thinking it's 'a bit like Zelda' is going to be very, very surprised. They're completely different games.
There are a few o_O moments in TP which look decidedly familiar after playing SotC, but they do say that imitation is the sincerest form of plagiari... er... flattery. -

Yeah, nobody is saying that the game is a copy, or a rip off, or anything negative. It’s just that there’s a couple of moments, namely the two Spanky mentioned, where there’s more than a little nod to SotC. It’s nice, I liked it. It’s good to know that these people are playing and respecting other games, even if they are made by the evil Sony. -
Isn't SotC basically a set of Zelda-like boss battles? To be honest I didn't mind how easy the battles in Zelda, the spectical was usually worth it. -

Registered 15 years agoI hate this argument, because having screen filling bosses is something done in games a million times before SotC. Hitting a bosses weak spots is something done to death too, so SotC really isn't all that original in those regards. The only thing that makes SotC original as a game is a) making the boss the level, and b) the wonderful art style.
I love both SotC and TP, and have completed both, but saying that taht fight is ripped straight from SotC is just ludicrous in my opinion. You don't traverse the boss at all. You don't hang on to his back, you simply hook over to it (not done in SotC) and kill kill kill until it takes a hit.
There's a similarity sure, but it's just not the same. It's an insult to that SotC boss to say that the last section of that particular boss fight in TP is equivalent of an entire level (one of 16) in SotC. -

OMG, stop saying that WW is a complete rip off of Princess Monokoke. One's a film and one's a game, how can they be exactly the same? -

Yeah I chickened out. I was worried that some people wouldn't look for the source and start lynching kalel. -

Easy but not as easy as TP.
Were the SotC boss battles as disappointingly easy, though?
SotC - Shit i ain't had a new weapon in this entire game, fucking hell, Sword of Dobber show me the weak point!
TP - Oh look a new toy, i wonder if it'll help me vanquish not only the entire dungeon but also the boss! ZOMG!
TP is just SotC only with all the Zelda baggage dumped on it for padding! :[D

Game's starting to drag on a bit now... Not much further.
I think they made it too long IMO. 42/43 hours now, I want to finish it, and play somehting else.

SotC is the better game, doesn't really need much discussion.
Still need to go back to TP and get the magic armour etc though. -
City in the Sky was pretty much my favorite dungeon, opens up a few more parts of Hyrule as well which was nice.
Personally I didn't ever want the game to end, but then I don't even find Wind Waker tedious.

Registered 16 years agoPhew, Twilight Palace. the last dungeon...
It's a tough call. On the one hand, I want to get to the end, on the, once it's finished, it's finished.
but then, I can still get Ocarina or Wind Waker on VC if I need a Zelda fix in the next 2 years or so.
So, to rush, or not to rush.... 45 hours clocked up on this masterpiece. Not that I've done half the things I could have done (did anyone?) -
It's not really the last one so don't worry about it just yet! You'll still have a chance to waste hours in Hyrule before it finally ends. The last level is a really beautiful one too
Replaying WW at the moment myself, hopefully when I've got though that Majora's Mask and LttP will be on VC. -
The last dungeon's definitely beautiful but a lot of the gameplay in it is a bit...O_O, particularly the arena bits. Not exactly Nintendo at their best. The boss makes up for it though.
With a bit more time between me an TP it's clear that it falls short of being a true classic. Although there are some great moments, it promises far more than it ever delivers and the last third of the game, although never less than entertaining, does drag a little.
But more than anything else, I think the thing it's lacking is magic. Not the magic bar, you understand, but that sense of spellbinding wonder, or moments of complete shock/surprise I got when playing Ocarina. Or, for that matter, SotC. Twilight Princess is a wonderfully, beautifully designed game, clearly the work of an insanely talented team (and as a designer myself I can give that some serious respect), but there were precious few moments that had me sat there, slack-jawed with wonder or astonishment, or bits that had me virtually leaping out of the chair in excitement.
It's 'merely' great, but it does make me wonder what would happen if (blasphemy approaching, folks) that team were allowed to go off and do something totally new, because I can't help feeling that maybe the problem is that I've just played too much Zelda. -
Because of the delay with my Wii I actually played through OoT for the first time before going into TP and I have to say that imo TP is almost on a par with it. It does some things better (better sense of granduer and exploration for one) and some things worse (it does take it's foot off the pedal for the final third as you say) but there were more open mouthed moments for me than OoT.
But I think that it's best left as Zelda's final farewell of the last generation. They've already mentioned that the next one will be 'new'. But then so was Wind Waker to some extent and see how much people loved that...
