| Just think of the Zelda games as separate entities. Which they are. Forget the timeline crap. Anyway, looking forward to Zelda Wii although not sure how good it will be in 1st person view. We all know it will be 1st person don't we? |

Registered 17 years agoThere is much less a proper chronology between the Zelda games than there is, for instance, the Metroid games. The only ones which bear any relationship are, allegedly, the 3D ones. All others are standalone.
I can't remember the WTF moment you're talking about, Sean. Can you spoiler tag it for me to jog my memory? -

Registered 18 years agoZelda games tend to come in pairs, with the main ones having a direct 'sequel'.
So Link to the Past > Link's Awakening, Ocarina of Time > Majora's Mask, Wind Waker > Phantom Hourglass etc. I think the NES Zelda II is a sequel to the first one, and of course you have the two Oracle games that can be played together.
Not sure where Minish Cap fits into this though, and as for TP... I seem to remember it referencing OoT, I think it was set a few hundred years after or something (but before WW). IIRC, there's never been an official chronological timeline, although Gametrailers did one when TP was released.

I don't know, not really. LA is nothing to do with LttP, and OoT, MM, TP, WW and PH are all related (via OoT and WW), so they're not really in pairs. The Oracle games obviously were but then, they were released together, and they aren't actually sequential, they're just... yeah, together. I don't know about the first two games, obviously the second was a sequel in the sense that it was LoZ II, but I don't think they're any more related than in the usual sense of having a Link, a Zelda, a Triforce etc.

Registered 18 years agoActually, I'm not sure if LA did follow on from LttP... I always assumed it did.
As for the others though, they are direct sequels. Sure, they're all related to OoT in some way, but you could say the same for all the Zeldas. But Majora follows on directly from Ocarina, ditto PH and Wind Waker.
I think TP was originally going to be a direct sequel, in the same sense, to WW - Anouma said as such in an interview just after WW came out - but the whole Celda furore probably made them ditch the whole idea and create the realistic Link instead. And the WW story was continued in PH.

Registered 17 years agoI never said they weren't direct sequels, just that they're not coming in isolated pairs, since those games are all related to each other. Link's Awakening is in not related to Majora's Mask in this sense, though.
And yeah, I'm not sure how TP fits in. I definitely remember it being intended as a sequel to WW. Whether that still stands in any way, I'm not sure. -

Registered 17 years agoLA did kind of follow-on from ALttP - Link's reason for being on his sea journey is to find help or weapons or something in case Ganon ever returns (didn't do a very good fucking job, did he?!), as it says this either in the game's booklet or the prologue.
Also, TWW is pretty much a 'sequel' to OoT, as Ganon returns, you learn about the first Link who was the Hero of Time, you go back to Hyrule castle, etc etc.
I think there is a chronology on Wiki, although how anyone has properly worked it out I don't know. I don't even really think there is a proper overall timeline; I think Shigsy intends each to pretty much be a standalone episode, albeit with muchos similarities and references to the others.
Not all that dissimilar from Final Fantasy, really. -

I certainly hope any future game isn't 1st person; frankly that's not something I think is necessarily a plus, though I do enjoy the very occasional FPS (as in I own ONE; at least until The Conduit comes out).
My word; who ever suggested Zelda become first-person?! Because they can take that suggestion and shove it up their arse, thankyouverymuch (if it's from that link, I can't look until I get home).
If you like this game Sean, you should definitely check out Okami next - both are brilliant, although I preferred the latter. -
Did no one else think this game was a bit over-rated? Kind of lacking in substance? Not really having that "just one more go" aspect?

Registered 15 years agoI'm of the opinion that it was rated pretty much spot on. It was a 9 or a 10 in most reviews if I recall, but certainly no less than an 8. It's one of those games that got beat up on a lot for reasons I don't quite understand. I thought it was marvellous. It was epic, engaging, fun and gorgeous. I'd put Okami just ahead of it for being so novel, but still, TP is a fooking great game. -

Registered 15 years agoWell Ocarina has legend status, but Wind Waker isn't as good as Twilight Princess for me.
Fuck it, it's decided. I'm going back on a steady diet of Zelda from today on. Lumines has been kicking the shite out of me for too long now anyway. ^_^ -

It was good looking, but it could have been better. The other three points were considerably blunted for me by the fact that it had simply all been done before. It wasn't epic, it was derivative and familiar, it wasn't particularly engaging - the large expanse of Hyrule /nothingness/ and the same old tired story kept my interest merely lofty - and there's only so much fun I can have solving old puzzles in slightly new ways, and vice versa. I also had issue with the controls.

It was certainly a good game, but it pushed no boundaries, took no risks and consequently felt quite lazy and presumptuous to me. As though Nintendo expected the return of familiar settings and characters to be enough for me to rave about it.
Of course, I can therefore understand why sean is enjoying it as much as he is, being new to the series, but serial games should be rated in context. All games are rated in reference to the rest of the market anyway - a particular series is just a little bit more specific than that. -

Snap. I got to the same bit twice about six monts apart then got bored shitless.
WW was much, much the better game. -

Registered 15 years agoYep, me too. I really, really wanted to love it but I just couldn't get past the fact that I'd been there before AND the fact that it had clearly been produced for the Cube and shoved on the Wii.
Wind Waker was a delightful game to play - it felt fresh, charming and despite the fact that the basic game mechanics were the same as before, it felt different. I loved the feeling of freedom and the fact that you could just stop on any island, even if there was nothing to do on there.
People moaned about the sailing and how dull it was, but for me, that was one of my favourite parts of the game.
Playing Wind Waker from start to finish and exploring evey nook and cranny is definitely one of my all-time favourite gaming experiences. -
The first time I played Ww I hated the sailing, thought it was just something stuck in to pad the game out. Second time through though it all made sense. The feeling of total adventure it gives still makes me smile today. -

Registered 18 years agoTP just didn't live up to the hype, basically. And it also just fell short of matching the high standards of some of the other games in the series.
WW may have been more flawed, but like JK said, it was a much fresher experience.

So tempting. I keep having a rummage in GAME's bargain bins. Turned up a copy the other day for an eye watering £45. I even took it up to the counter to say WTF?
I'll pick it up again in the new year. -

Registered 18 years agoLike all Zeldas TP grows in hindsight. Its when you realize that most games doesn't even come close to the level of polish you start judging it by its own merits rather than some fantasy image -

On its own it's a fantastic game, no doubt about that. But like Prof said, franchise games should be rated in context. And it certainly was overrated when it first out, with plenty of 'OMG best Zelda ever, 10'-type reviews.
Sadly all that did was increase the hype for the game, so when I did get around to playing it I was left wondering what all the fuss was about. Though I guess this is true of pretty much all big blockbuster games released these days.

Personally I also thought WW failed to deliver. I'm not sure whether I prefer it or TP as a result, since I was disappointed with both for different reasons.
