Farore's Wind is okay, 'cause that's the magic of a fucking GOD. But magic chickens? Sorry, I'll pass. |

Registered 15 years agoMetroid Zelda crossover eh? For the record, I think it wouldn't work, but I'd buy that game in a motherfucking heartbeat so I would. ^_^ -

Registered 17 years agoWon't work and won't happen, I'm afraid, BUT (and I've been saying it for ages), what we really need is a Smash Bros. RPG!

Registered 14 years agoBeen playing this lately and love the obvious nod to the Sergio Leone westerns when you first walk into the hidden village!
The music (including the boingy rubber band sound), appearance of the village and the camera shot behind Link.. Fantastic

Registered 20 years agoAnybody else get bored with this around the Goron mines bit?
After getting the Iron boots I just seemed to lose interest and that's a first for a Zelda game with me sadly.
Think I might have to dig it out again -

Registered 16 years agoWhile obviously everyone has their different reasons and ways of thinking, I think the ones who want Zelda to change a lot come down to two different types of people:
1) Those who don't like the already rather huge changes in games like Majora's Mask, Wind Waker or Phantom Hourglass and don't think the smaller changes in games like Mysterious Fruit, Minish Cap and Twilight Princess do enough to shake up the games.
2) Those who want the game to "evolve" into something they feel is more advanced than the Zelda idea of simple combat, puzzle-solving and dungeon/overworld exploring, i.e. those who ask for a one-to-one sword battling or RPG elements or more story, voice-acting.
In both cases, I think its a case of players having much different ideas of how gameplay should proceed over the years to the creators of the Zelda series and the people who don't really have any complaints as to where the series is going.
For myself, I just want them to do whatever the hell they want, as long as they don't release too many Zelda games in too short a period of time, which is the only gripe I have. Since Zelda relies so much on the sanctity of the experience, making it more common and frequent tends to reduce the impact a little.
Though I think its rather bunk to say Link to the Past, Twilight Princess and Ocarina of Time are all that similar. It's kind of like saying Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario World are similar because they have both a lot of the same settings and level themes, or that Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy X-2 are similar because they both use the job system. -

Registered 17 years agoYou missed a third group Jin - those who do like the rather huge changes in Majora's Mask, Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass, and would like to see changes of a substantial nature in all releases, not for Nintendo to think 'oh well we've given them something interesting, now it's back to the same-old same-old'. Not that they do necessarily think this. -

Registered 16 years agoWell, I'm not sure you can actually get them for that too, at least not with Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess. To get across my point across let's list all the Zeldas and see which ones really go someplace different and which ones stay a little closer to the guidelines.
Off the Beaten Path Ones
Zelda - Since it was the original it was really brand new then
Adventure of Link - to this day, this is still a weirdly made game
Link's Awakening - importantly started allowing people to combine items, broke away from Hyrule, was the first game to really advance the puzzle solving in the series, had a totally different atmosphere and combined the 2D platforming of Adventure of Link with the advancements in Link to the Past
Majora's Mask - nuff said
Wind Waker - probably the most stunning achievement in the series, even if its not my favorite game
Phantom Hourglass - this game REALLY changed a great deal of what's come to make Zelda's identity
Traditional Improvements
Link to the Past
Ocarina of Time
Mysterious Fruit
Minish Cap
Twilight Princess
If you look at that list, the only two that didn't significantly advance the formula are Minish Cap and Mysterious Fruit and even those games had their quirks. We're all by now well aware just how completely innovative and groundbreaking Ocarina of Time and Link to the Past are.
That leaves Twilight Princess and that game does branch out in a lot of places, like the Panzer Dragoon sequence, the jousting, the sumo wrestling the gorons, the very fresh design of the yeti mansion and so on. (Also, Midna KICKED FUCKING ASS.) I've also never seen such things in a Zelda game as the cutscene after the water temple, the gothic lolita girl bug collector or the approach to Hyrule castle scenes. All of those were shockingly fresh. It seemed to me like the game was taken in lots of different directions at the same time as it seemed somewhat traditional as well. Certainly that rod that controlled statues and the gear skateboardy thing were two of the most inspired new Zelda gadgets ever and one of the first times since the hookshot that I've hoped they appear in another one. (Well, there was also the mole claws in Minish Cap that were awesome.)
Personally, I don't see it. -

Registered 18 years agoYou're right about Zelda TP, in that when you think about all the small details you mentioned, you realise that it's still a great, and often unfairly criticised, game.
But when you think about the overall picture - the same old dull overworld, repeating dungeon themes + puzzles, lack of side quests etc. - that's what makes you realise that major changes are necessary.
I think I know what I want now, and that is for each future Zelda to be different. Keep the same mythology, characters, and settings, but take the gameplay in wildly different directions with each installment - like what PH and MM did. I think that's what they're planning to do now, but I hope that future games are more substantial and challenging than PH. It could be like the Mario platformer series - you always look forward to the next entry, because you never know what to expect. How awesome would that be?
