Registered 18 years agoI dunno, I never felt that was anything approaching an excuse. Justin Lee Collins is aware of his oafishness, and Alan Carr is aware of his campness. I still find them utterly, utterly intolerable.
Anyway, enough of the George Lamb of videogame writing. Back to what is, quite literally, the next Dragon Quest - any more impressions? -

Registered 16 years ago-You get various titles for all sorts of things and you can set them to change in your multiplayer profile, as well as look at them in your battle record. The multiplayer profile comes with one set one based on your gender and how you want to sound (like an old man, a pompous ass, a nervous little boy, etc.), then you can slot in various other things like the place you come from (you can select from real world or input Dragon Quest places once you find them) and your title. Then there's a second field where you can write in your own introduction. The manual and the game both stress to be nice and not write bad things or cause stress to others. That's Dragon Quest!
-The inventory is now split into an character-by-character item page which can only hold 8 (back down from from 12 in 8), a equipment page where you can hold lots of each type of the 8 types of equipment, the bag to put extra items and a list of important items. So the importance of bringing the right items into battle is there, but you can stash things like alchemy stuff or non-battle items in the bag. As well, it really helps you mix and match clothes. There are some clothes you can just buy and have the same kinds of benefits as another type, so it helps you customize things, like for instance, chosing to wear white gloves or not, between cloth pants and striped boxer shorts and so on. This affects your "Style" stat, which if high enough dazzles enemies in battles, making them stunned by your appearance, and might have other effects.
-The game is much slower paced than some people are probably used to, letting you explore without getting attacked for a while, then only getting attacked a little, then only by one enemy at a time with one or two party members, then gradually to two enemies at a time and so on and so forth. I love the gradual unpeeling feel as it feels a lot like an epic novel unravelling. You really get the feeling of the game building up which can sometimes be lost in RPGs that focus on too much and go too fast, where you don't get a sense of place or presence. That's definitely not the case here.
-As usual, there's different music and townspeople for night time scenes. But since you can see enemies on the world map now, there's a big difference in the feel of what you see at night and day.
-The symbol encounter is encountered really well and has eliminated my fears that it will remove the game's classic difficulty and unpredictability. As much as you can avoid enemies now, sometimes they will materialize out of nowhere or when you turn around the corner you'll get surprised by an enemy that blends into their surroundings or is behind a pillar, so you get the feel of being surprised and bewildered by attacks you didn't expect from a random system. As well, based on your level and the enemies personality, they might just sit there, walk around, chase you, run away, charge in a straight line, jump all over the place and so on. I've had a lot of story-like experiences of running away from a Drakee, which drew the attention of a Laughing Bag and sent me flying straight into a Wandering Flame. Enemies tend to all disappear in the area after you've had one battle, so there's none of the getting-out-the-battle-and-here's-the-next-battle-because-that-guy-was-just-on-my-tail things.
-The world map is just like Dragon Quest VIII in that it's an absolutely huge, epic-looking thing that will take to trek across and explore fully. Likewise, as usual, you're given a plot to go along with, but free to explore along a set land or area to your heart's content. For instance, by going off the beaten path I found some definitely suspicious areas that look like they will be used for sidequests later and a lovely grove in a valley ripe with free herbs for picking.
-Perhaps because of the multiplayer focus now, dressers, cabinets, pots and barrels sometimes regenerate with new items if you let enough time pass. Blue treasure chests do as well. Red ones, like usual, only have one treasure that only be taken once. That said none of the regenerators ever have anything really rare or amazing, so it can't be abused. -
I've yet to encounter more than 3 enemies in a battle, I hope it doesn't stay like this

I cannot get Ruida's Tavern music out of my head. Ra-ra-ra-ra-raaa ba-chi-chi-chi, ra-ra-ra-ra-raaa, ba-chi-chi-chi.
Also, the scenarios are, as usual, crazy charming and told so well. When Rikka ripped out the trophy and the level up theme played, I laughed out loud!
You must be learning a lot of Japanese, Pirotic. There's a lot of good expressions for you take from this game. Can you tell how much better written Dragon Quest is than your average game? -

Registered 17 years agoAhahahaha. I love how enemies on the map start running away from you once you get powerful enough. Hell, I'm liking this more than any other DQ so far because of the lack of random battling. -

Registered 16 years agoToday, on the way back and to school, I set my DS on encounter mode and 4 other players visited my world. They were welcomed into the inn and had the dialogue set for them in their profile as NPCs, and it showed their stats like time played, where they were, and they showed up with what kind of armor and clothes they were wearing. Two of them, both college students from Tokyo, gave me treasure maps. I searched for them outside the Saint Styne Castle Town and found a cave leading to a place with tough enemies I've never seen before. I lasted for a little while, going deeper and then got whiped out by tank frogs. I guess I'll have to delay that treasure hunt for a while!
In order to reward the two college students, I invited them the posh royal rooms in the inn upstairs, which you can do by talking to Rikka and seeing the guest list. -
The amazon.co.jp score disagree's, but both are probably just as tainted as each other. What's the general consensus from the Japanese about it? From the forums it looks like a lot of people are slightly disappointed that they've made some sacrifices to the single player for the multiplayer side of things. -

Interested that Famitsu had to wait til now to get a review out, though. Generally they review games the week of release, not the week after. -

Registered 17 years agoQuestion for Jin. Well, more like a small help request. .gif)
I might just be missing something really obvious here, but I am trying to do the quest that those faeries give you in the inn after you finish Dharma Tower. As far as I can understand, they want me to kill 10 enemies with the faerie staff they gave me. So I equipped it on my mage, and whacked 10 weak enemies to death with it. The quest doesn't complete, though.
What am I doing wrong? Do they mean that it has to be equipped on my main character? Apologies if you're not up to that bit yet, but I thought you would be - given how much you seem to have been playing the game.

Registered 17 years agoHeh, I just got past a certain part in the game with a surprise that isn't really all that surprising. I'll put it in spoilers just in case, but I won't mention any names. It made me laugh.
Guy: "Give me all the important stuff you've collected, so I can... uhh... deliver it to our leader."
Me, having played too many RPGs, dreading what I know is going to happen: "No."
Guy: "No seriously, gimme."
Me: "No!"
Guy: "No seriously, gimme."
Me, deciding to let the plot continue: "Oh, ok." *gives*
Guy: "AHAHAHAHAAAAA, BIG MISTAKE PAL." *beats me up, flies away*
I hope this tradition never dies. -

Registered 16 years agoSome of the other cool things I've noticed about this game:
-When they say the game doesn't end after the ending, they actually mean it. There's an absolute brickload of content to play after the credits roll. It's pretty overwhelming actually. The game isn't longer than Dragon Quest VII, but in order to complete every task in the game (and not crazy stuff like getting everyone to level 99), it will easily take longer than Dragon Quest VII. A lot of the stuff actually affects the game world as well, so it's not just trivial bonus stuff.
-In most RPGs, enemies only appear in one or two locations and stay the same. In this one, there has been some instances of enemies reappearing with new properties and higher strength. This is a really cool idea I hope I see again in other RPGs.
-The amount of info given to you really works with the symbol encounter system to make this game smooth. In bringing symbol encounters, Horii designed a wealth of stuff after the fact that you can search out enemies.
-The main town and indeed some other areas really change a lot throughout the game with new dialogue, new quests and new elements making them seem alive. -

Thanks for the info - that sucks ASS!
I'm going to get some of the older DS DQ games then to keep me amused. I'm def getting DQ: Monsters: Joker but can't decide between Chapters of the Chosen or Hand of the Heavenly Bride. WARK! -
I just picked up DQ9 yesterday and I'm having a ball with it. This is going to eat up a LOT of my time!
