HL1 had the worst last map of any game i have ever played!

    Great game bar that bit!

HL1 was great until Xen I think, but before that I totally agree with Lou on the being there at black mesa.

    bit crap this init
  • Deleted user 5 October 2008 01:13:55
    :o! NO!
  • Deleted user 5 October 2008 01:16:54
Yea it is. Starts off incredibly well, and for the first three hours it was very engrossing, but it turns to shit at Ravenholm and never really recovers.

Being mummy Ant Lion is good though. Very nice graphics n'all.
  • Deleted user 5 October 2008 01:19:23
I like Ravenholm, gives you some great Grav Gun options. The Ant Lion bit for me is the worst part of the game, but I love the on the water part and the Citadel areas. It's good damn you :(
  • Deleted user 5 October 2008 01:33:23
See, endlessly respawning enemies suck ass. HL2 doesn't do that for the first three hours but it's as thought Valve though "fuck it!" and changed the rules. :/

    +t

I actually enjoyed the hoverboat sections. It felt quite "James Bond" zipping a high speeds past and through the soldiers, then a big battle with the gunboat at the end... All very exciting to me.

Why is N@ always so wrong about everything?

Anyway, even though Half Life was the first FPS I ever played, and it totally engrossed me, I rate HL2 as a better game. Linearity is generally a good thing in my books :)

I also agree with DDevil, the hoverboat bits were ace, and I usually can't stand tacked-on vehicle sections in otherwise good games. It's done right in HL2, though.

Plus fighting striders in the city ruins is epic!
  • Deleted user 5 October 2008 09:54:32
Exactly! My volume up, bass pumping as the striders fired, playing on Hard so it really felt tense and made you work really hard to stay alive...it's one of my favourite gaming moments of all time.

I really love it when games inspire real passion. Looking forward to getting into this when it arrives from Play.com.

Wouldn't it have been cheaper to Steam it? Or you talking about getting the 360 version?

Ahh, Lexx, that reminds me - another thing I love is the music in HL2. Really got the blood pumping during intense bits :)

My laptop seems to refuse to play episode 2, which sucks.

PS3 version of The Orange Box for £12. The ol' computer probably wouldn't be able to run it :)

I know there are meant to be issues with the PS3 version, particularly in Eps2, but for £12 it's well worth a go.

Well into next year, Valve are now regretting this Episode idea and are wishing they didnt start of with calling it that.

Valve's Doug Lombardi has admitted that Valve may chose the wrong word 'Episode' for the Half Life 2 run of games.

The notion of the word 'episode' conjures up this idea of television where you get something new every week. And people say 'we thought that episodic meant we were going to get something new every six months or every year',

I think a lot of folks in the games industry saw the same problem that we did with Half Life 2 in that making a 20-hour game with rich graphics, story etc. is a really expensive proposition both in time and money.

And some have started making games about the same length as Episode II, but they haven't changed what they call it, and they haven't change the price.

In a way you're charging people $50 but they're only getting $18 worth out of it - that's not necessarily the best way to go. But if you look at something like Portal, it's a five hour game and although I haven't done a qualified study, the number of people I've spoken to that finished the game feels like a much higher percent.

The only thing that pissed me off personally about HL2 was that before it was released, they released an awesome video of a Strider battle in the streets. There's a bit where a strider walks around the corner of a building and then blows up a walkway across the street with its cannon thing...it looked awesome then and still does now but was never included in the final game. Sort of annoyed me a little bit as I was looking forward to it. But otherwise still a bloody good game.

    Valve's Doug Lombardi bullshitted:
    ...a 20-hour game...

Developers seem to have a real problem recognising how long their games are!

I remember a lot of things like that in the previews - the Striders were supposed to navigate properly (i.e. being smart enough to duck under low bridges if they couldn't smash through) and there was mention of being chased behind a door - whereupon the enemy alien thing would smash a hole through and peek around with a stalked eye. Etc.

Absolutely brilliant from start to finish. Can't wait to see what they do for HL3 (assuming thats their next project after Episode 3).
