Registered 15 years agoI first played it when it was released and thought, "Meh, it's not as good as the original" and propmtly gave up shortly after the gunship fight. It was only when I purchased the Orange Box and played it through again that it came to be one of my favourite games of all time.
It's amazing to me that after 25+ years of gaming, in the last 2 years I've played two or three games that would undoubtedly get in my top 10 of all time: Half-Life 2 and Fallout 3 particularly, Disgaea is lurking somewhere too.
I too can't wait for HL3, but Ep. 3 will do me for now! I hope it's out this year but I know full well what Valve are like. -
HL2 is my favourite game ever. It's nearly perfect, with exception to the bit solly just mentioned. Roll on ep3!
Whatever happened to the medusa shown in the pre-release trailers? -

Registered 15 years agoFinally got around to starting this properly with The Orange Box after a brief foray on the original Xbox. Pretty amazing game all-round and certainly creates an incentive to carry on into the Episodes.
One quick question though: Is it normal to creep nervously around Ravenholm holding a circular saw blade infront of you like a divining rod? I get the distinct impression that the game is trying to make me use up my precious ammo.... -

That's perfectly normal, partly because it's ridiculously satisfying to chop zombies in half with those things.
-
No matter how much ammo you have you'll probably spunk the lot in your first visit to Ravenholm
Saw blades FTW. -
Yeah, Ravenholm was their attempt to get you to use the gravity gun, as there's no way guns alone will get you through... Unless you're lucky. Especially once the fast zombies start to come in waves! -
Ravenholme isn’t so great after that first run though, but first time it was on of the scariest expierenced I’ve had in a game. The hunchback ones that throw the black face hugger things at you freak me the fuck out.
I love HL2, I really do. It’s far from perfect but it’s so immersive I can easily see past its flaws. -

Registered 17 years agoRavenholme does go on a bit too long, and so lost quite a bit of tension for me near the end. But the whole 'We don't go to Ravenholme' thing, and the first time you enter it and find out exactly why, is certainly one of my most memorable gaming experiences in recent years. The complete change of tone really took me by surprise.
It's funny, when playing through HL2 I couldn't help but think about how inferior it was to HL1. That might be true, but it was still every bit as memorable. -
Oh I love it. I'm playing through it again (when I can get L4D out of the drive) with a bit more difficulty and to try to tick off some achievements. Ravenholme is still a highlight, even though it's familiar. I think the length is well judged because you can see where you're trying to get to almost the whole time, and it gets a bit closer with every rooftop. It's the pacing of the game which is so good; the bits where the intensity ramps up are really well chosen, and the slower sections do much to immerse you in the story: what's happened to the sea? Why's it so quiet? Where's everyone gone?
Definite "OhFFS!" ending though. -

Registered 16 years agoI played this beauty on it's release on Xbox. I thought it was great then but having recently played it again on PS3 Orange Box, it has risen in my estimation. The episodes were brilliant too and I'm now dreading the inevitable Valve announcement that Eps. 3 will be released on all but Sony's platform... The PS3 hating bastards! -

Registered 17 years agoShould be playing it on PC anyway! -
Regarding the ending in the citadel - the Super Gravity Gun was awesome. It was a present from the team - 'up until this point these guys have been cunts. NOW SMASH THE SHIT OUT OF THEM'. The reappearance at the beginning of Ep 2 wasn't necessary though. -

That's precisely how I saw it; the whole thing was an extended end sequence / 'gift' to the player to go and kick arse

Yeah, agreed. Besides, I loved the citadel, well, "architecturally". I found it an absolutely amazing place to be in.
Biggest problem in HL2 for me remains the AI, or complete lack thereof. With FEAR's (or Half-Life 1's, for that matter) AI, it would have been the best game ever. As it is, I adored the art design and universe, but thought the shootouts were mostly a little dull. -

The worst part about the AI was how badly it stood out next to Alyx's scripting. -

Registered 17 years agoHELP!
I'm on the hovercraft, with the gun. I've just taken down a helicopter in this huge wide open space. The helicopter was dropping tons and tons of bombs. Now I need to get into, or onto a facility in order to open some doors so I can leave this area: loads of moored, rusty ships hanging about. However, I can't find a way up onto the structure. It's really fucking annoying.
There is a kind of ramp made out of logs leaning up against a large, metal crate but I don't seem to be able to get enough height in order to get up onto the structure.
HELP! -

Registered 15 years agoUse booooost when you're approaching the ramp and see if that helps. I too can remember the section, but the details are vague.
Here you go, is this the bit on pic #45-51?:

Registered 17 years agoYeah dont you use your hovercraft full tilt up the ramp to get to the higher ground?
Or if it's the bit where you have to open a big gate, have you scanned that whole coastline for a ladder? -

Registered 17 years agoErr, feel free to laugh at me, but how do I boost? I'm pressing SHIFT and nothing's happening. I've checked the the OPTIONS and there seems to be no boost option. -
err yeah. It is 45-51, actually.
I can't boost. I'm shit.
