Registered 20 years agoChrist these people are something else…
After much deliberation I decided it was time to retire my PS4 and take advantage of Game’s trade in to get a Series S for £99.
Looked online and checked stock - nearest place to me is sold out, but two other stores had stock so I thought I was sorted.
PS4 wiped of data, packed up in its original box and carted off to Game… which I discovered was inside a Sports Direct shop. Ok, no worries…
… apart from Ashley (for it must be his fault) has decided not to kit out said Sports Direct concessions with an actual TV they can use to check console trade ins!
So this national promotion they’re running is actually not available in a significant number of Game stores, but of course they don’t think to tell you that, do they?
To make matters worse, it seems no one in a Game or Sports Direct will ever answer the phone under any circumstances, so it’s actually impossible to find out if any given store can complete this transaction as advertised.
To be fair to the people working there, it’s not their fault and they were all sympathetic that I’d trundled around every Game in the vicinity with a PS4 under my arm (albeit they were unable to actually help).
Thing is, this is exactly why retail is dying on its arse. It’s just an incredibly shit experience when (offers aside) some bloke from Amazon will deliver nearly anything you want to your front door, and probably for a lot less money.
Sigh. -

I appreciate the interest, but I think Game’s offer of £150 is probably more than it’s really worth. By the time of sorting postage on top, you’d be better off buying one with a warranty.

Plus “one in one out” is the only way I can realistically expect to persuade my wife to allow a new console in the house…! -

Registered 14 years agoJust lugged a One X, PS4 Pro and One S, all boxed, to Game hoping for cash for the first two (my old ones), and a trade-in for the One S to a Series S (for my son).
Told that testing each console takes 1 hour, so would have to wait at least 3 hours.
Oh - and there's also not enough cash in the till for trade-ins, so we would have to come back before close to see if the store made enough that day to pay out (~£300) or come back another day ("Saturday's are normally good") to pick up the cash.
FFS. Waste of time.

Registered 4 years agoJust seems like a lack of foresight for this deal because they will eventually be stuck with a bunch of old consoles they can't shift.. because they wanted to massage the numbers Series S sales. -

Registered 13 years agoThe testing procedures at GAME always baffles me, I've traded a couple of consoles in there and they always seem intent on trying to install and update the biggest game they can find.
I had one guy pop an old version of FIFA in and then tell me to come back 3-4 hours later because it had a 43gb update and their internet wasn't very fast. I asked if he couldn't just use something small like Minecraft instead, which to be fair he did and I was out of there 10 minutes later. -

Registered 5 years ago@paulboy81 Sounds like poor staff support/training. Incidentally, the old game near me had no manager for 4 years. Just some poor girl on minimum wage plugging the gap until she eventually quit. It shut down shortly after. -

I sympathise… it’s a massive ball ache getting your kit to these stores only to find out they can’t / won’t give you the offer they’re advertising, and I can only imagine the frustration of being stuck for hours while they “test” a console - let alone 3.
Honestly, I don’t know why platform holders seem to want to give these promotions to a retailer with such a bad reputation for customer service.
I’m seriously considering just keeping the PS4 and sacking off the whole thing… -

Registered 20 years agoOk so I feel a little bit bad now.
My local Game got some new Series S stock in yesterday so the deal is done! I’m a happy Xbox Series S owner.
The staff there were great - helpful and efficient in testing my PS4 which took barely 10 minutes (they used a Lego game which was playable in seconds so no ridiculous wait for downloads) and aside from making me pay for a replacement USB cable for the controller (mine was, admittedly, split at one end) it all went through as expected.
There is still a disconnect between the mostly good people who work at Game - probably because they’re passionate about gaming as opposed to just wanting any old job in retail- and the way the business is managed centrally.
Things like not being up front that you can’t do trade ins in the concession stores; not answering the phone numbers you post on your own website; not offering a simple Argos-style online reservation system… it’s like they’re clinging to a retail model that needs to be put to sleep. They need something 21st century if they’re ever going to survive the likes of Amazon.
Anyway, £99 and a traded in console from 2013 is a good deal for a new machine and the Series S seems perfect for a second “spare room” console to complement my PS5.

I guess Game will look to sell these as used, but as mentioned above, it seems highly likely that Microsoft is funding this promotion in some way.
The Series S now seems to be widely available with no stock shortages - which isn’t the case for the X or PS5.
If they can persuade a few people to jump on board now, and not hold out for the other machines, and get them all subscribing to Gamepass, it’s job done. -

Registered 14 years agoSorry for my ignorance. Is there a trade a PS4 for a Series S promotion at GAME? As an owner of both a PS4 and 5 but no Xbox One or Series X/S that sounds like an interesting proposition. -

I think it's a PS4 plus £100 gets you a series S. -

I got one XSS AND because they had one, a XSX too. Looks like the shortage is no longer there then
I don't think there are terms that say you can only do one trade, but the cunts at my local store claimed this was the way it was,so whatever. -
