Registered 11 years agoIt sounds like a continuation of Admiral Fell Promises (even making references to it in the lyrics), which is more than alright by me. -

Registered 11 years agoA friend and his mate record some things, might fit into the category:
Fun Factory -
Hurray for the riff raff made a new album recently - think they only have a publisher in the UK, but the album is on emusic, for example.
The band is from New Orleans, lots of banjos, strings, bit of brass, really like them a lot. Here's an older, slow tune:
And one from the new album:

Registered 11 years agoThe first Mount Eerie album of the year, Clear Moon, is out now (I don't think it's being made available on CD for some reason, but you can buy a digital version on his Bandcamp). Bit of a song from the next album, Ocean Roar too. -
Bought Clear Moon recently, it's great - although like with Wind's Poem, I am much more a fan of the quiet songs than the sound thunderstorms - I appreciate what he's doing, but I don't have the desire to listen to those tracks at home all that often!
-
anyone know of "electric guest"?
Just heard a track called awake on the radio from their album mondo so I'll give it a listen when I'm home. -
I know Lou mentioned Bill Callahan in the first post but Apocalypse by him is well worth a listen for anyone who hasn't yet come across it. And following from that would be "I'm New Here" by the late Gil Scott Heron (the godfather of rap ?) which has a cover of a Smog track but is amazing in its own right anyhow.
While I'm here, gotta mention anything by Cat Power, even though she might be a bit mainstream now, especially You Are Free, Moonpix and The Greatest. Saw someone mention Gillian Welch - thumbs up for Time (The Revelator) - awesome guitar, not too keen on the other albums (or even some tracks off "Time" but the good stuff on it is amazing). For autumn/winter miserableness, can't beat Beth Gibbons solo album "Out of Season".
And to add to the Midlake debate - crap, OMG, boring. The OMG was for "Trials of ..." - where did that come from - thats an incredible album, and why was the first album so crap, and maybe Courage of Others was just a bit underwhelming after "Trials". "Courage" deserves another few listens I reckon.
And to lift the slight gloom of Cat Power and (little bit depressing) Gillian Welch, anything country/folky by Black Francis/Frank Black from The Pixies, especially Dog in the Sand (and his other pop/rock stuff is great too, especially Teenager of the Year). -

Registered 13 years agoCourage of Others definitely improves on further hearings, but Van Occupanther is still their outstanding album IMO.
Quick plug for The Destroyers, local band done good. Latest album is a corker, and they are something else live. -

Registered 11 years agoI'm sure this won't be news to thread regulars, but the new Lambchop album is something else. It's the only one I've heard, mind. What other ones would people recommend? -
I really rate Courage of others, its a real nice album. Its very, rugged, seasoned. It doesn't have the harmonies of trials, but its really interesting. Trials is amazing though. stunning. saw them live in bristol a few years back, astonhsing live as well.

i listen to a lot of the bands in this thread, what are peoples take on john frusciante? his my fucking hero, and the band/singer/music i love most. Things is across his 10 albums (11th in august, new ep out in two weeks
), his style and genre change a lot.
Curtains and the will to death probably suit this thread the most:

Fucking hate this genre but.................... been listening to this quite a bit.

country blues (far better than that genre describes itself) - reverend peyton and his big damn band are in the UK. Appearing at the Monro Water Rats pub in London Oct. 18 i think. I couldn't recommend them high enough.
