I loved the Midlake debut, songs about Ballon Makers and kingfisher pies,it was a Psychedelic Lo-Fi masterpiece. This years effort was a big let down for me though. |

Pretty embarrassing.
You tried to zing me and it completely failed. Come on, you can admit it. -

I winked. Do you think we've made enough of a derail to this thread now to allay all those worries you suddenly had that your blize allusion was missed and you just looked stupid? -
I think you're the only one who looks stupid here.
I've seen the blize Reuters thing mentioned since he left. -

Great pick, they completely slipped my mind. -

Registered 14 years agoI think it fits with the post's title, so I'd like to recommend Fink. I like very much, kinda downbeat and chilled.

Sounds like it should fit the title, Strand of Oaks..

.. music shaped by a house-fire and a bad breakup. -
Remembered another pick for here when I was listening to my iPod last night.
Sun Kil Moon.
Mark Kozelek from Red House Painters (another great band) goes solo. Well, I say that, but I think some of RHP are occasionally involved with Sun Kil Moon.
If I had to recommend one song by SKM right now, it would be Alesund, from the recent album Admiral Fell Promises. Gorgeous, stunning acoustic guitar work, great lyrics, and a flamenco intro. One of the best songs of 2010, IMO.
As for a single album, Ghosts of the Great Highway is the stand-out IMO.
I guarantee anyone with an interest in the music mentioned in this thread (The Mountain Goats, The Microphones, Will Oldham, The Magnetic Fields, etc.) will love it.
Also, The Tallest Man on Earth's popularity is growing. I'm not his biggest fan, but it's another guy I think suits the thread well and people will enjoy. -

We've talked about his voice before. I see where people are coming from who don't like his voice, but for me, he's my biggest musical "discovery" of the last few years. I am as much in love with the guy and his music as a hetero-sexual man can possibly be, and bought every album, EP, single, and whatnot I could get hold of..gif)
A fantastic gig can be downloaded here.
(NPR is a terrific site for music anyhow. Great podcast(s), particularly "All songs considered".) -

Registered 15 years agoDidn't really know where to put this, but I listen to a lot of the stuff UncleLou mentions in his OP, and we sort of fit those parameters.
So, here's my band's brand new site, with a free download... until the end of December:

Just downloaded. Brilliant. Loved it!
If you come to play in Nottingham, I will buy a ticket to see you -

Registered 15 years agoI'll mention Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band
Bio: The Big Damn Band is very much a family affair, with the good reverend on finger-style resonator guitar and lead vocals, his wife “Washboard” Breezy Peyton on washboard and vocals, and distant cousin Aaron “Cuz” Persinger on drums and bucket. -

Wow, great. Seriously. Just listened to all you offer on your myspace site. Which crashes all my browsers in the photos section, btw.

Registered 15 years agoThanks for the kind words, it really means a lot to us at the minute. There'll be more free downloads over the coming months.
We also have a presence on the more mainstream social networks, though I appreciate those sites aren't everyone's cup of tea. But there's things like photos and vids on the FB page. -

I'm listening to the new Kurt Vile record at the moment, which suits this thread down to the ground. It's okay, bit plodding TBH.
I can also thoroughly recommend Sharon Van Etten's album from last year, Epic. She turns up about halfway through this video, along with Cass McCombs, who fits this thread nicely (although I find him boring!).
If it'll entice anyone to watch, she's fit.
edit: You picked the worst song on the album! Come on man, it's all about [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYLz9y6VWkc&feature=related">For Charles Bronson and -
Lo-fi of sorts I like/love: Songs of Green Pheasant, Ida, Sun Kil Moon, Spokane, several more I can't remember. -
Tiny Vipers too! Best EVUR. -
OH and has Gregor Samsa been said? Damn memory. -

Very nice. Just browsing through the music thread looking for music to play on Spotify and just playing this track now, lovely stuff.
Otherwise, The Tallest Man has an awful voice. Nearly as bad as Michael McIntyre's. Nearly. -

Not on Spotify
Only their self-titled album, I'll check that out instead. -
I'm currently working on some music that is pretty lo-fi and indie-folkish under the name of If This Is A Man. Hopefully you might enjoy it. You can stream or download it free on bandcamp here:
