I'd say worrying about a Chinese company having your fingerprint is a little silly and even hypocritical in an age when most people voluntarily share literally everything about their lives on social media. Social engineering is a much more likely threat. (I'm not on facebook or Instagram, but obviously Google knows far too much about me)

Remember that Wired editor who had his Apple account hijacked and wiped by getting access to his Amazon account by adding their own credit card to his account and then phoning customer service? Who needs fingerprints.

Yes, Apple devices have better information security, but a.) how important is that really, and b.) does it make any difference?

I thought it was generally accepted those where weak passwords/phishing? Not Apple's fault per se, just a weakness of what was considered acceptable security practices at the time. Not that what we have right now is much better.

I don't think that's silly at all. We worry way too little about that.

I am also not sure "most" people share so many things on social media. I certainly don't, and most people I know who did drove that down to a minimum. Obviously you can only see those who do.

From what I’ve seen so far, most pro Apple supporters on YouTube are advising against getting one this year.

Mainly because of the price and lack of new/interesting features.

Apparently the keynote didn’t have the usual major boasting as per usual.

    They’ll probably sell a fuckton.

@beastmaster Seems a better year than last year to me, where you had thenchoice between an extremely expensive new design and the old ones.

Now threre’s a newish one that costs about as much as I paid for my iPhone 6 four years ago.

Yeah, it's comparatively bold for a 'tock' year but I don't think they could have kept the iPhone 6 design limping along for much longer.

I think the price for the XR is pretty insulting considering you can get a one plus 6 for a fraction of the price with better technology. The camera is an interesting point, but I have a mirrorless camera on me a lot of the time when I'm out so that doesn't interest me. Having an lcd 720p screen is laughable. I just don't get it aside from a status symbol.

And you know what i would consider at XR if it was £400-500. Potentially the 720p would offset that it was affordable. It's just bullshit from apple imo.
Guy made a point if you can afford £750 on a phone you can probably push the extra for the next model up...

Anyone noticed that people with mirrorless camera always feel the need to mention it? Must be some kind of status symbol.

It’s got a 1792x828 screen at the exact same pixel density as the 8, perfectly fine for a phone screen really

It's a hobby and a valid point when people try to justify that they have a better camera on their phone etc.

You're absolutely right. It's still piss poor information security from apples end and, just like huggybear said, following a much more likely way of "hacking".

I think the damage done by the, completely incorrect, view that the fappening wasn't a hack is quite severe.

Oh, I'll just keep trusting security questions because Apple had this super secure enclave that keep my fingerprint safe.

I think Apple is clearly holding back, they are doing incremental updates to all their products, but nothing that evokes the reactions like when they first showed the iphone or ipad.
It's also clear that there isn't a lot you can add to phones these days, so I'm pretty sure they are working on what they think the next big thing will be.

If you look at the apps they are pushing, and even showing on stage, AR is going to be a thing. I think we might see a pair of goggles that connect to your iphone. They are making their own silicon at this point, where they seem ahead of the competition, they now have experience with wearables, they have experience with 3D depth sensing via FaceID and they have defacto doubled the price of what people a willing to pay for the latest mobile thing. Not saying it's going to be a huge success, but apple glass seems obvious at this point imo.

Anyone used the iSmash stores for repairs? My wife stood on her mini 2 with heels on. £90 seems very reasonable indeed.

I was offered 200 for my Galaxy S6 in exchange for an S9. Think there was even a limited time offer of 300. Not bad for a phone I paid 500 for. Went for a Nokia 8 though.

So, it's not like all android phones are worthless used either.

That's not what you said though, is it? Unless camera reviews are constantly pointing out their phones take better pictures than the cameras they review which would be weird.

Buying a phone now and expecting anything innovative seems unrealistic. They’ve gone about as far as they can in their current form, all improvements are going to be iterative until something like folding displays come in.

There’s no point upgrading from last years phone but that’s nearly always true. It’s only if you want the huge screen, which I do but I’m not paying for it.

Yeah, I don’t understand the crying from yearly upgraders, these people are NOT the norm. Just highly prolific in forum discussions.

It’s reached the point where a new phone now should be highly capable for minimum 3 or 4 years plus.

They’ll sell tonnes of the Xr, it’s likely a great phone for most norms.....but £300 too much, ouch.

This is one of the main reasons CPW is in trouble. People are either keeping them way after their contracts are up and switching to sim only or buying them outright with an eye on keeping it for ages.

Are there any plans for UK networks to support e-sims soon? Information seems thin on the ground. I could justify buying one of these if it would mean I no longer needed to carry separate UK and Ireland phones

@Jambajuice EE are the only network listed as supporting it, although the feature won’t be available at launch (being added later in the year) so other providers may be working on it - pretty sure other networks support esim on iPad and Watch.

Yeah but I want a good phone. I’ve had enough pain with Android in the past
