I've just set up my Xs, jumping from a 6s, and only because I got a pretty good deal on it. Its so gorgeous, and the camera seems amazing.

Face ID is a pain in the arse though. Touch ID was so much better on my old 7 plus.

I love the colourful look of the XR but would be loath to have an inferior camera so I'll soon order an XS to replace my X.

Portrait mode is shit and I rarely use the zoom so doubt Iíd care very much about the XR camera being single lens. Iíve got a real camera for when I care about anything more than snapshots. Itís 3D Touch that Iíd miss

Yeah, I dislike Face ID as well. My X is all cool and all, but Iíd rather they put touch id back in somehow (preferably on the front, not the back).

Has it been confirmed if the XR has the same amount of memory as the XS? I know there were rumours it had been lowered, but haven't seen anything concrete.

I had thought it to be 3GB instead of 4GB.

Yeah, that's what I heard but Apple don't even put that particular spec on the 'detailed' spec sheet on their own fucking website.

Well, in fairness, it's barely relevant right? For what 99% of users do, they wouldn't even feel the difference. For years they haven't reported RAM, if ever. Just their way, they sidestepped a lot of the clock frequency, core-count, RAM wars and focussed their techie bullshit on displays and interaction.

Yeah, I know they don't list it because, for the sake of comparison to an android, it's a meaningless stat, but the nerd in me wants to see a comprehensive gimp list before committing.

The Mi Max 3 has amazing face id. They even tell you when you enable it "this is not very secure and can be unlocked with a photo"

    It unlocks in nanoseconds.

I had a "shootout" with my old 6 and a mate's X, I found the X shocking. Unless you're in direct sunlight, it looks like a watercolor painting, not like a photo. Maybe the RAWs are ok, but I find the jpgs unusable. Literally. The amount of obvious processing, noise reduction etc. makes the photos out of the 6 look better (not that they're not pretty terrible as well, mind). It really is "digital imaging", not photography.

Obviously I expect the XR to be just as terrible, but I stopped caring about the camera.

Got the XR 128GB in Coral - for Mrs Ork, I am strictly an Android guy - and she's chuffed to bits. And as a strictly Android guy I have to say I'm quietly impressed, but Jesus Christ it's a lot to pay. Now to shift the 8 and recoup some of that ridiculous outlay!

Interesting, I'll need to do some comparisons with my camera and see how obvious it is to my old eyes...

Aye, I heard this, but Iím not sure where it stems from: thereís some smoothing, but not as much as the 6, and certainly not as much as the Ďbeauty shotí effect that is bundled with some cameras. Perhaps the front-facing camera in low light?

I went to Xs max from a 6+, Iím finding it rather lovely and Face ID is much quicker than fingerprint. Only thing is itís a bit weird that after unlocking with Face ID you still have to swipe up so the time saved is almost wiped out. Just a nitpick really, also I have to manually select it to auto join my works wifi every single day which is annoying. Maybe both of these can be avoided by a setting somewhere?

    @ChiefGB

Don't wait for it to unlock, swipe up as soon as you pick up the phone.

Yes. Unlocking takes place while you swipe up, and even if it hasn't finished authenticating when you're done swiping, it will simply finish up with Face ID and then take you to the home screen.

@askew They are going to roll back the beautification (at least in part) with iOS 12.1.

My XR got refused delivery as I accidentally put the wrong postcode on the order.

I feel like itís Godís way of telling me to get the XS I really wanted.

Hah. If you REALLY want it go for it.

I'm a cheapskate so always try to nab a bargain but if your going to splash hundreds on a gadget sometimes you have to go with the "best" otherwise you will have a couple of years with that niggling feeling of "it's great but its not X" or XS in this case.

I just keep coming back to thinking Ďis it really worth an extra £300 just for an OLED screen?í and the answer is invariably no. I also like the XR mid size.

But yeah, Iím normally all in favour of pushing the boat out a bit to get the thing you really want. I only get a phone every 3 or 4 years so itís a long time to have minor purchase regret.

This is truly the most first worldy of first world problems.

On the other hand, if you bought the XS, would you constantly look at it and think 'that absolutely wasn't worth it. That 300 quid would have been better spent on coke and hookers'?

It is an odd one. The XR is manifestly the best bet, right down to the storage tiers being more sensible.

£100 a year for an OLED is definitely worth it.

Dunno, just changed from a galaxy s8 to an xr and other than pure black it doesn't seem any worse.
