"XS" with the first letter being pronounced as a roman numeral and the second as "ess" was idiotic, and everybody except Apple employees always calls it "ex ess", which from a company with not exactly affordable prices is not a smart marketing move, with it sounding almost like "excess".

So at least they are moving away from that.

I dunno about that. It does unify the product line, to a certain extent. Now the hip, young self facilitating media nodes will have an iPad Pro, MacBook Pro and an iPhone Pro in their backpacks.

Oh yeah I get that. And it doesn't run the risk of people calling it an iPhone ex es Max (a near oxymoron) like its predecessor but it's just so long and unwieldy. If they really, really needed both Pro and Max in the name I kinda think they should have maybe ditched the number. That would put it even more in line with other Apple products too.

I suppose they’d ideally want to ditch the number like they did with iPad but with the phone market you need that obvious reminder that your handset is a year or two out of date

At what point do you give that up before it sounds stupid? Even 11 is going a bit far.

No one seems to be noticing that these aren’t 5G compatible yet

Macs and iPads get replaced by newer models. But iPhones stick around for years as cheaper models, so leaving out the number is problematic as then it would be difficult to know which generation of iPhone you're buying.

But they could have left out "Max". It's not like it's a problem to understand the concept of the same device coming in two different screen sizes. People apparently get it with MacBook Pro, MacBook Air (the older ones), iMac, iPad Pro…

They bought a 5G modem company recently no?

@elstoof A 5G modem company with afaik no finished 5G phone modems. It's a slow process and there was never any expectation that there would be 5G this year (it would have been surprising if there was). Even next year I reckon they'll use Qualcomm's rather than their own.

Apple are on a 'tick-tock' phone cycle. Android manufacturers do something one year and then they get around to it the year after.

Samsung whacked out 5G last February, which is why I’d assumed Apple would have to keep up here. No 5G iPhone until Christmas 2020 then

That's in keeping with Apple though. They took ages to get 3G and 4G if I remember right and are often behind on features. 5G is barely available and not quite living up to the hype yet, so they're justified in this case, but also I don't think they really had the ability to do it yet.

You never know, they might break tradition and tack 5G onto one of the existing models as some sort of mid-year upgrade, but I doubt it.

I feel like these days phones are fast enough and the cameras are okay too. So instead of more cameras and a faster chip and 5G I’d prefer a phone that lasts a couple of days and doesn’t shatter when you drop it.

I agree, and Apple tried to address both those points. Harder glass, we'll see how that goes, and hours more battery life. It's a start.

They've painted themselves into a corner by making "thinness" a talking point before. Don't remember any mention of that this time, so maybe they'll start beefing up the batteries over time.

They're actually thicker and heavier than last year's models.

I’m pretty sure they keep using aluminium and glass because they know everyone drops their phone sooner or later, so they either need to pay for repairs or get apple care.
