It's especially sad as if you read the ideas for a sequel to The Thing that have knocked around over the years (if you really HAD to make one) there was some pretty decent stuff. Rob Bottin wanted to direct a crazy, FX extravaganza. Frank Darabont had some ideas. The Dark Horse comic direct sequel is pretty good as well. |

Registered 16 years agoThere never was much point to making a sequel to The Thing, it's wholly unnecessary. To answer any of the questions the original leaves us with, diminishes it.
MacReady and Childs seek refuge in the burning remnants of the camp, one, both or neither could have been assimilated, if you had been assimilated would you even be conscious that you were a perfect replica rather than who you thought you were, until the moment came when your true nature asserted itself?
So they share a drink and wait, knowing that it's probably for the best that when curious rescuers arrive in the Spring they find no bodies, no trace of the occupants at all. -

Registered 10 years agoNot enough love for The Fog! The Fog and The Thing are in my top 5 films of all time (I have it laminated). But, for me, The Fog is John Carpenter's best movie. The atmosphere is incredible (there's a pun in there somewhere). That shot where the fog bank is lingering out to sea... just cool. And kicking it off with that ghost story - exposition at it's finest.
I also think his soundtracks are awesome.
Unfortunately, he seemed to lose his touch in the early 90's. Still, what an amazing run! -

Registered 14 years ago@AceGrace They Live is already out as a steelbook in the UK. In the Mouth of Madness and Prince of Darkness have cheap as chips German blus: I wouldn't hold your breath waiting UK ones. It took Studio Canal forever to bring out They Live. -

Registered 10 years ago@bad09 Yes, the remake was truly awful. On the same level as the Stephen King remake of The Shining awful. -

Not a remake, as such, a TV "movie" shown as a two-part mini-series, it's meant to be a lot closer to the story told in the book than Kubrick's adaptation.
@SweetMrGibs
Never knew they remade The Shining....sounds like it's best it stays that way as I love that film.gif)

Registered 8 years ago@Furtive_Pygmy although it was shot in the Stanley Park hotel. The hotel King was staying at when he thought of the shining. Worth seeing for that at least!
Anyway I fucking hated kubricks shining when I first saw it as I lived the book so much. Kubrick fucked the characters up completely. He also pissed in the Indian burial ground shit and a whole load of other wank.
But... Ah but. His film version is now one of my most favourite films ever. A masterpiece. My mate laughed his head off at my disbelief it was all shot on a soundstage bar the odd exterior scene. Masterful filmmaking. I see it as a seperate entity to the book now.
The miniseries was limited in budget but Steven weber and Rebecca demornay are the Jack and Wendy from the book. Plus like I say the hotel was closer to what it should have been.
King is no twat. The Shining is a masterpiece of literature, can't blame the guy for trying to bring it to screen closer to his book.
Anyway, fuck that. I've just put Big Trouble on... \o/ -
@bad09 film kills King. Sounds like you need to read more
