I see there's a metal appreciation thread about, so I thought I'd start up a hip hop one. I personally prefer early 90's hip hop. Stuff like Cypress Hill, A Tribe Called Quest, Gangstarr, Nasty Nas (now just "Nas"), Death Row Records (Snoop, Dre, Dogg Pound), Erick B & Rakim, Public Enemy. I also like hip hop around the 2001-era, like Ludacris, Outkast, Snoop Dogg, Wu Tang. I've not listened to much recent stuff but I do try and go to concerts as much as possible. I've seen so many artists over the years. So what sort of hip hop do you prefer.? |

I like good hip hop from any era
These days I generally only listen to classic stuff, weird anti hip hop hip hop, and UK stuff. -

Registered 12 years agoI'm very similar to you Beats - I love the 90s stuff like the Chronic, Doggystyle, Black Sunday, NWA, Eazy E, etc, but really don't like the new stuff. I find it tedious and self-indulgent.

Registered 14 years agoThere are a few hip-hop artists I like, such as Snoop Dogg, RJD2, Outkast... I even like a bit of Eminem because he doesn't take himself seriously and doesn't see himself as some pimp.
Apart from that, hip-hop has gone down the fucking toilet. Rappers talking about how they get a lot of money, bang lots of hot women, repetitive lyrics. The only thing that can save these songs is a decent rhythm/melody, which almost none of them have.
However, hip-hop does allow for 'grinding', a dance that I enjoy immensely (basically a girl wiggling her arse against your crotch)
edit: and Beastie Boys ftuw!

Registered 16 years agoLove lots of hip-hop that will innevitably be mentioned here which shocks people when they see me as i look more indie/industrial. i've been listening to loads of Immortal Technique, Sole and RJD2 lately but i suspect they're more Rap than Hip Hop. -

Please don't talk about mainstream MTV commercial Hip Hop as if that were the only thing that existed. It makes me cry. -

Registered 17 years agoBeen listening to a lot of The Infamous, Moob Deep and Liquid Swords, Genius (GZA) lately. It's shame Mobb Deep is so commercialised now after joining 50 Cent :'( But they had a good run. Genius need to get off his fat arse. -

Registered 16 years agoRap is probably my favourite genre of music overall. Big fan of past and present acts such as People Under the Stairs, The Roots, Tech N9ne, Yukmouth, Gang Starr, Black Sheep, Swollen Members, Big Pun, Bone Thugs, Jurassic 5, Jedi Mind Tricks, Non Phixion, Charizma, Nas, Dead Prez, ATCQ, The Pharcyde, Digable Planets, and many many more.
Oh and Hip-hop is an urban culture that incorporates rap music (MCs, DJs etc), graffiti, breakdancing and many other elements.
Rap music is just the prominent musical genre in said culture.
Sorry, just the mistake annoys me.

It's not a mistake. There are lots of types of music that fall under the broader hip hop term, including rap. To describe any of the above artists as "Hip Hop' is as correct as calling a piece of Drum n Bass "Dance" or something. -

unfortunately, since I'm living in the states, it's pretty much the only kind of hip-hop that I hear, MTV or not (and even if it isn't mainstream). It's sad that it makes up such a big part American culture and tbh, it makes other people my age less open to other genres of music. I could be talking bollocks, but for now, this is what I've seen so far.

I like the lighter side of hip hop, and by that I mean no gangbanging, people that have stories to tell or at least a positive image.
Digable Planets, Jurassic 5, The Roots, Dilated Peoples, Ozomatli...even early Black Eyed Peas (before they had a Mousekateer). -

I go through phases of listening to loads of hip hop then loads of something else -

Registered 12 years agoHip Hop is my favourite genre. The sound is laid back, the bass is nice, and the skill rappers have in using their words is amazing.
Now, saying that, I prefer rappers with good lyricism. Rakim, KRS-One, Nas, Eminem, Big Pun, Big L, The Notorious B.I.G. immediately pop up in my mind.
Hip Hop at the moment though is rather dead at the moment, since most people prefer bragging and sexist raps. Makes you miss the 90s, when some rappers weren't dead yet. =/ -

Three 6 Mafia is pretty tasty stuff and I like 90% of the stuff Jay Z turns out.
It is perhaps at this point I should add that I also downloaded Hillary Duffs album as well.
