When I was in the West Country I was always picking up tapes that they’d done under various guises (the Alan Lamb project springs to mind), but I’m not sure they ever did anything else official. Actually I think I’ve got a Parlour Talk remix of some Portishead track on a 7” somewhere… A bit odd, as they more than any of the rest of that lot had some real might behind them. Being on Acid Jazz made them much more legitimate than the rest of that scene. They were probably just too weird in the end I guess. There is some other West Country stuff out there which is similar. All Creatures which was mentioned earlier in the thread are in with the Parlour Talk lot and have a similar style. Fleapit and Aspects are also probably worth picking up. Anything on Hombre is probably worth a listen at least. |

I've got the Fleapit and Aspects albums, Fleapit is pretty awesome. Might try and dig out some Alan Lamb project though... -

Registered 18 years agoAmazing track with early nineties vibe by Mad Skillz, summing up all 5 seasons of The Wire. AWESOME. -
Like I say, I think all that stuff was on tape. In fact I’m pretty sure it was all home recorded and copied to sell at gigs. I think you’d have to really look hard to track it down sadly
One of my biggest regrets was accidentally leaving a whole bunch of tapes in my old car when I sold it. I lost some totally irreplaceable stuff, including those tapes. Used to get loads of good stuff on tape at those gigs – freestyle sessions and such. Actually, there is a Bristol Battleraps video around which has Deed freestlyling on it. That might be easier to find as there was lots of copies. -

Recommendation for you all - New Q-Tip album - The Renaissance. Brilliant album, very Dilla
My personal favourite from the album
I don't listen to much hip hop these days, but this album is frickin' awesome - easily in my top 5 (all genres) from last year. -

Registered 17 years agoI went to see Notorious last night, I was skeptical but it was actually very good. Worth a watch if you're a Biggie fan. It was done well, some of the attention to detail was excellent (like a freestyle he did on the street aged 17, which they featured exactly as it happened - vid) -
That's cool, the ad looks awful. They made Biggie sound like such an emo pussy.
Apparenly a lot of people like Lil' Kim have come out and said it's all bullshit, but her and Faith Evans have had issues going way back, so no suprise there really. I will definitely see it.
Cheers for the email btw Pete. I''ll check that out later! -

Registered 17 years agoI thought the guy playing Biggie did a decent job of it, very big shoes to fill really but it worked once I'd suspended some disbelief, if that makes sense.
That tune I sent you is absurdly heavy, it really is! It's called Nottingham Bronx by the way, Cappo & the P Brothers. Kind of old school in a way -

Registered 17 years agoTo be honest, all I've heard is the advert for the ablum and it sounds atrocious. Not my sort of thing at all. Plus as Pete mentioned, the guys hat is indeed ridiculous. -

There's lots of Def Jux stuff youd enjoy if you like that, plus anticon and all that.
BTW, Primitive Plus is the best album of the last ten years. -

Registered 17 years agoYour suggestions are appreciated, not really a fan of Cannibal Ox or Quasimoto myself, the beats and lyrics are weird (not in a good way)
I'd really like some Premier produced stuff that I haven't already got, that would be perfect -

Not Hip Hop but there's loads of cheap Mowtown compilations out and about in HMV at the moment. Might be worth a look.
I like the odd style of Quasimoto, odd things in Hip Hop is a good thing as it keeps things fresh for me. I assume you've delved into Madvillian's stuff? Or Danger Doom? -

No, but it's Primo produced.gif)
Think that was his last full album, he doesn't seem to do many these days, just the odd track, apart from Gangstarr of course. I take it you have all their albums? -

Just out of interest, are there any Gangstarr albums where Guru doesn't suggest he's the best MC ever and every other rapper is just a wannabe?.gif)
You could also try some of the jazzmatazz stuff though I've always found it a bit smooth for my tastes. -

I could pick up some old Jeru, I've only got Wrath of the Math. The SUn Rises in the East is supposed to be excellent
