Any high level recommendations of new material? I've realised I've listened to almost no hip hop in 2020 outside of run the jewels or black thought (and a few UK artists like Kano). Well I have but nothing of note that I keep bumping.

I don’t bother posting hip hop deaths in the celeb thread as everyone gets all ‘who??’ twatty about it, but Double K from People Under the Stairs has died :(

that's terrible :-( PUTS were consistently great, and never quite got the hype they deserved IMHO. Their final album in 2019 was just as stong as the others.

Yeah I always thought they came to the scene a bit late for their style of music. That whole laid back jazzy thing was kind of done by then. They were very underrated.

I found this gem on my old laptop, Broke n English from an old DJ Excalibah CD from way back in the day. Fucking love this tune. The sample is from the Conan the Barbarian theme. Pure fire

Two of my favourites in the last few years have put a track out. It's grown on me a lot, wasn't sure on first listen.

    Freddie Gibbs & school boy.

After liking his verse on Frank Lucas I've been listening to Benny the butcher this morning. So far played through "The plugs I met" twice as I'm loving this, hopefully the rest of his work is like this. Always nice to find a new rapper I like, it doesn't happen often. I'm that old person who finds most new (er) rappers shite and the kids just think I'm out of touch.

Some of the Griselda stuff is great if you like that 90s crack rap. Surprised you haven't listened to him before. Check out the others too.

I will do thanks. Always on the look out for new decent stuff. I get stuck listening to the same artists over and over in all genres of music.

@Bichii All the Griselda guys are really good and well worth having a listen to. Conway the Machine, Westside Gunn, Boldy James etc.

Benny is the best for me with Westside Gunn(voice) being the weakest. But there's so much material they've released it will keep your ears busy for a while.

As somebody who only dips into hip hop sporadically, and not being aware of the zeitgeist, I'm cautious of presenting views that aren't cool.

But I've recently been enjoying Denzel Curry a lot recently. Ta13oo shows a lot of diversity in his approach. Later albums maybe didn't feel the need to showcase this as much, but 've very much enjoyed Zuu and Unlocked.

Not directly related, but on my current drunken jukebox track-flipping binge though I ended up relistening to Kanye West's Yeezus and it's fucking great. I think the man's a knob but this album in particular is so fucking mental it's amazing. by turns the production sounds like Daft Punk (obvs as they produced a couple of tracks), Aphex Twin and Sheep on Drugs.

I'm always on the lookout for good new stuff, my tastes are pretty old school (guess I'm just old). But here are a few gems from this year:

Krum - Black Lung - compilation of different MC's all produced by Harry Krum, who is excellent

Jazz Spastiks - Camera of Sound - another compilation, jazzy upbeat J5-esque sound

Awon & Phoniks - Nothing Less pure 90s East Coast production, modern lyrical content all nicely executed. With lots of lovely scratching - in 2021!

    I liked that.

It's how Eminem thinks he sounds in his head nowadays.

I normal hate most Khaled stuff but he has just dropped a track feat Nas and Jay z. I'm actually a fan, the beat is silky smooth.

Edit..jay z really needs to sort his hair out!

Disappointed with the track, generic autotune hook and phoned in verses.

    Shame.

Still bumping Benny the butcher. Damn every release in the past couple of years has been on point. Benny and Freddie Gibbs for me are by far my favourite rappers for current output. Good to see considering they both old timers and been around for years. Most artists go the other way.
