    MetalDog:

    1. No, you can't - with the EU version, you can only play on EU servers.

    2. Not sure yet, the EG review suggests it's pretty soloable.

    MagicPanda:

Yes, the first month is free, but you need a credit card for the account right away (although there are other payment options, I think).

And yes, that was a white lace glove, thought I'd motivate you a little. :)

Hit level 7 this morning (had to have a quick half hour go before work this morning - working from home can be perilous :)) and the game is starting to open up a bit more now.

The UI is still fairly clumsy, and some of the art direction is... questionable. But it does have an atmosphere all of its own, and a certain charm too. It's doing a lot right, and hasn't made me regret leaving that 'other' game in the slightest as yet. Just nice to be doing something new for a change. :)

Totally agree about it having a charm all it's own. It's not trying to make a better mouse trap, but at the same time it is a nice place to spend some time and have that elusive missing ingredient...FUN.

To think that this is still such early days and the first content patch is on the horizon is all very promising. The 'other game' did take about a year to really bed in and iron out the bugs, at this rate Turbine should have a product they should be very proud of by the summer. Amazing turnaround considering what they did with D&D, always nice to see a company actually learn from the experience.

I have to disagree with the EG review on that front. I'm at level 24 and I would say that 75% of the quests in my journal recommend fellowships to complete them. Most chain quests end in a group mission, and most of the big money/reward/xp quests are for parties.

That said, I have solo'd up to this point most of the time without much problem but really it is more enjoyable and interesting in a group. You'll also find that your skills seem to make more sense in a party, and you do use your character in a different way.

Quick question. Is there any pvp at all in this game?

No PVP in the main game world. There is a separate mode called Monster Play that runs kinda in parallel, where you can be the 'bad guys' for a while, and that can generate rewards in the main game for your characters.

But no PVP in the World of Warcraft or Dark Age of Camelot sense.

The EG review covers it reasonably well.

Got the free trial but just couldn't get into it; never felt like I was playing Lord of the Rings, Wow with different make-up. Bring on Warhammer Online, shame its slipped.

Hmmm. I can see how it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, but having played WoW for two years LOTRO is like a breath of fresh air. MMORPG games will always have similarities, but this game does so many fundamental things differently (the Deeds and Traits are very well thought out, for example) that the comparison is a bit askew.

I'd have to say that the opening few levels are by far the weakest, though, both in terms of fun and raw production values. I wouldn't be surprised to see them lose a lot of potential customers on that alone.

I am looking forward to Warhammer, though. All that gives me pause is that Mythic are developing it and sticking reasonably close to some of their Dark Age of Camelot templates that were better left in the past. Time will tell, though. Hopefully it'll be a winner.

Ask ten people and you'll get ten answers. :)

It's not fundamentally broken like Vanguard was (as far as I could tell anyway, after three months of patching I'm sure it's almost playable now) but equally it's not as polished as WoW is after two years of constant refinement and expansion.

Certainly some ten levels in it has its claws in me, having already stuck 8hrs or so into the game. I've had full price 360 games not last me that long. ;)

When I installed (day after release) it came down at a solid 600KB/s which wasn't too shabby I thought. Hopefully it won't take too long for you.

When you go to build your character, you can trigger videos that give you an impression of what it'll be like to play as that class. Have a look-see and hopefully something will take your fancy. :)

For my part, having been marginalised in World of Warcraft for not picking a class in the Holy Trinity (tank, healer, pure DPS), I decided to go with the Minstrel class which is the primary healer.

Generally, though, you'll get a good feeling for what you want to be based on the videos. Most people naturally develop an affinity with a particular class. For me it was seeing a short dude defeat a demon by the power of an awesome lute riff. ;-)

/edit: as an aside, there's a LOTRO group you can join that has lots of info on it. As you say, most of us are on the Snowbourne server and in a Kinship together.

Been playing this for an hour or so . I have to say it really doesn't light my fire.

Seems like a skinned version of its competitor, without the cartoon charm.

    Feels quite bland.

    Lag tonight too, quite bad.

I think it's been said already, but give it a bit longer before writing it off. The starting areas aren't great and you don't get to see any of the interesting traits for a good few levels.

Speaking of which: my dwarf can now headbutt stuff! It's utterly useless in combat, but it squashes squirrels nicely. :/

Yeah, like others have said, give it a chance. Those were my first impressions, too, but it's really quite good, and different enough.

    Enjoying it a lot.

Only sometimes. At other times, it's breathtakingly beautiful and completely trounces WoW (and Oblivion).

Quick question: Is this game actually set in Middle Earth (as in, accuratly made from the maps and things from the books)? Or is it just Miidle-Earth/LOTR films-like?

Personally I find the idea of going on some silly pilgrimage from Rivendale to Osgiliath or something hugely drawing. Sounds like it's a lot to ask though.

    Yes, it is.

Take a look at the map(s) to get an idea

And you can wander freely everywhere?!? Even Mordor and places from the Hobbit (Dale, The Wood Elve's place etc)? How about the Prancing Pony, and those woods where Tom Bombidil live? (as you can see I can carry on naming places forever, so I'll stop there!)

Fuck me that's some stonking gameworld they've gone and made there!

Well, the game's not complete yet, there's no Mordor, for example. Don't know about the Hobbit locations, it's been too long. But just the other day, I've been wandering from Bree to the Shire, and actually into Bag-End (seeing the remains from the festival), which certainly took 20 minutes or more.

You're basically free to go where you want, but of course you'll be too weak first to actually do that.

The LOTR story is also woven into the game, so it gives you the impression as if the fellowship is underway somewhere in the gameworld while you get a quest from Strider in the Prancing Pony.

Tom Bombadil is in the game, you can visit his house. Goldberry is rather pretty, too. :p

    edit:

I'd like to add, it's not really a lot like I imagined it would be when I read the books, but it's still an extra layer of immersiveness.

Just reading through the FAQs now actually. My system seems like it should play it at the minimum specs (I've got a 3.2 Ghz, 1Gb RAM, GeForce 5200 256 Mb). Are their minimum specs actually playable do you know, or are we talking 10fps stuff here?

The environments look decent, but the character models I've seen are downright hateful.
