There's something missing from LOTRO, I think it takes itself too seriously. Mid level zones look quite similar and it becomes pretty heavy going, particularly solo.

Really? I think the zones are fantastic. Some have literally left me breathless at how incredible they look. I guess it's because they're NOT purple flying rock zones or whatever that I appreciate them all the more...

I quite liked LOTRO. I think it's still the best looking MMO on the market. Just a shame the armour designs are pretty wanky up until higher levels. Agree that it was a bit to serious though, just needed an injection of fun. Enjoyed it though.

The only wanky armour designs I've really seen are in relation to the awful head-gear. There are a LOT of "1960s fantasy peasant" hats and the helmet designs are actually a little too authentic (as in being based on medieval designs) to have that "cool" factor some other games have.

That said, I was previously playing AoC where everybody wore the same brown skirts and hats, so there you go...

Wish someone would make a proper D&D MMO instead of that Eberron bullshit.

Don't get me wrong I think Lotro is great. :)

Evendim with the massive lake was pretty cool. I couldn't help thinking that it would be perfect for big player crafted boats and whatnot kicking crap out of each other and then realised something like that is never going to happen because of the Lore restrictions.

Funny, that's exactly the location I was thinking of when I made that comment.

Boats would still be a nice addition, though - heck, even a canoe as a water-based "mount" would be ace.

Really? I actually bought this the other day on a whim. Why you playing this? I would have thought CoH would have been more your scene.

Anyway, yeah, we should do this when I get some spare time.

It's fucking excellent, by the way.

My first MMO and I'm very impressed.

To review Moria, surely you have to have a high level character already?

Do so Gl3n, it's ace. Seriously, one of the best, deepest MMOs I've played for a long time, but still accessible and fun.

Love the new Legendary system - it works really well and the whole Moria thing feels incredibly epic. So what if the early Moria quests see you being an errand boy and delivering sandwiches to hungry dwarves? The whole Watcher scenario and the resultant opening sequence is brilliant.

Honestly, ANYBODY who likes MMOs should check out LOTRO, as it's criminally underrated and blows every other MMO out there away in terms of its content, depth and polish.

Nice buzzwords, but wow has significantly more content and depth. LOTRO does look awesome though. I wish it had a more developed pvp system.

I'm not denying WoW is a good game. However, if you play for a long time, you'll find it applies the "inverted triangle of content" in that it starts out broad but, as you play, gets narrower and narrower, leaving fewer high-level options and you wind up either logging in to do Daily Quests, grind cash or go Raiding. Or you can go PvP but it's just another grind.

That's the problem with WoW - you're always on the grinding treadmill and all the new expansions do is expand "end game" by adding... more of the same. It's very good at what it does, sure. But it's just what it does is pretty dull by the time you reach 60, let alone 70 then 80.

But don't worry. All of LOTRO's features that haven't already been ripped-off my Blizzard will soon be appearing in the next expansion...

    What's the LOTRO endgame?

Thing is, your first MMO is always is pretty amazing experience. I even thought Final Fantasy XI was amazing at first (that was my first).

Not that LotRO isn’t good, it seems very polished, but I wish I could get back that sense of wonder I first got with FFXI, CoH and WoW.

    What's the LOTRO endgame?

    ----

About the same in terms of character advancement to be perfectly honest. However, LOTRO has more width in terms of crafting, housing, Deeds, etc.

As I say, if you're a WoW player and enjoying it, good for you. I played - and enjoyed - WoW but it became repetitive very quickly and I get the impression Blizzard are more interested in keeping the cash-cow going now rather than innovating.

Thanks, fwiw - was a genuine question, wasn't fishing for a rise or somesuch.

I tried LOTRO and quite liked it but had a PC with a weak gfx card at the time and kept getting hitching, which made it very annoying to play.

Re: blizzard- to be fair they never have really been one for big innovations as I'm sure you know - plunder tweak and polish to perfection is their regimen.

Nothing wrong with that really, as it means you do get a boildown of the best features of most MMOs out there. But sometimes they do chop-out some great features and it all ends up being a bit bland. WoW is a bit McMMO, if you ask me.

Until you can play as a Orc, I just don't see the point of this.

    ---

That's like saying WoW is a shit game because you can't play as a Murloc.

No worries. It was actually an interesting question as it's made me think about what I think WoW gets wrong at eng-game: it's too "cookie-cutter." Everybody aspires to the same raid drops, builds and gear and everybody ends up the same.

What I like about LOTRO on the other hand is they offer choices at that level: there are no "killer builds", gear is customisable with the Legendary Weapons system and there's a host of other "custom stuff" you can do (housing, outfit items, titles) that just make it broader.

    That's the big difference, IMO.
