Due to the fact that I can't afford an iPod, not in this lifetime anyway, I thought I'd settle for a phone with an MP3 player on it.

However, does anyone know how you actually get the songs onto it? And the phone I'm after has a 64mb card in it. How many songs will that hold? I thinking that the average song in WMA is about 4mb... so am I right in thinking about 16 songs worth here?

What phone are you looking at mate?

Is the card upgradable? SD cards are *relatively* cheap these days.

MP3's roughtly work out at 1meg per minute.

Check it actually plays WMAs, a lot of them don't. I've got a T610 (and had a T68 beforehand) with the Ericsson HPM-10 MP3 addon device whcih plugs into the arse of the phone. It came with a 32mb MMC card (and a reader, and only cost £30 at the time) which will hold about half an hour of stuff really, but only MP3s.

If the phone takes MMC then its about £25 for a 128mb card. The larger ones are slightly harder to find.

To be honest I'm fine with 64mb. But that's worrying me, that it may ONLY take MP3. All my music is in WMA format. Damn.
Well, I've got 14 days to cancel the phone anyway, so that's not a problem.

Anyway to convert WMA to MP3 easily?

Depending on how good your ears are you will probably lose a bit of quality as your re-encoding something that's already been compressed.

Nokia 3300 plays MP3 and AAC only. Converter software can be found here (I haven't tried it myself)

    Fuck it.

What a son of a bitch.

Is there anyway to sort of, erm… Put a CD in the drive, click "Record" and have it record in MP3 format instead of WMA?

I was ripping my music with WMP because I preffered the track info it was providing, but then I thought about the WMA compatability issues, so switched back to CDEX, but I'm now back with WMP with an MP3 plugin. Best of both worlds.

As for how you get songs on there, it's probably the same as everything else you can put on the phone - Blutooth (slow), IR (slower) or serial/USB cable.

IFYSWIM(sic) - IF you see what I mean

As for the cable, you use the one you get with the phone.

Cool. So cable is provided, will plug into PC. Got Firewirte, USB and Headphone, it'll fit one of them. Especially if I try hard enough. ;)

Now the opnly problem is converting WMA into MP3...

It'll be a USB cable, or if they're shit then it'll be a COM one. Or it might even be a USB MMC reader thing, which you can always buy so you don't have to have the phone plugged in and you can just transfer the files like its another drive on your PC.

Oh yeah, I forgot about card writers. They'll probably be faster than going via the phone, definitely if they give you a crappy old serial (COM) cable.

I've never heard of a phone coming with a card writer, though a USB one is only probably about 20 quid or so.

True - but it wouldn't have been too difficult for them to include it in WMP would it?! Gits.

I didn't use a kazoo, however I did play the tune "Little Donkey" and that helped.

    NUDGE NUDGE ;)

remember that when recording mp3s you can choose a bit rate, i have a puny 16mb memory stick duo in my p800, but by dumping the quality i've got 15 songs on it. quality is obviously much reduced, but it allows me to have a soundtrack on my way to and from the pub on the weekend.

    *bumpage*

Does anyone have the Nokia 3300 ? I swapped to a 6820 on an upgrade, but I've since gone back to the 3300.

However I SWEAR I had my alarm clock has a song, rather than a normal "beep, beep. Beep, beep"

But I cant' find out how to change it... if I can that is, I might be making it up.

It would be just as easy to re-rip them from your original CDs. You do have the original CDs, don't you?

fair enough, didn't read the dates.

On a Nokia 3220 on my desk I can change the alarm tone by going into Calender, Alarm, Alarm Tone, Ringtone and then selecting the appropriate one.

My calendar and Alarm are not together though. :(

@GA: The Mrs is getting that, but in April. My contract dopesn't expire for a while, and I'm happy with this phone. Besides, I've got 128mb of space. ;P

Most phone MP3 players suck... especially the ones where the battery life gets sucked dry.

For £50 you can get a 256mb mp3 player that takes AAA batteries. Cheaper and better really :)
