Planescape: Torment - quite old, and hard to get, but pretty much the best RPG ever
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines - first/third person RPG using the Source engine, terrific writing. Should be cheap as chips now.
Neverwinter Nights 2 - great single-player campaign, as opposed to NWN 1
Titan Quest - not really an RPG, but the best Diablo 2 clone available - terrific graphics, hopelessly addictive if you like the action RPG genre
edit:
Oblivion, of course - flawed, but still worth it

But the writing is obviously the main reason for playing it. Obviously.

Registered 13 years agoThere aren't a lot of RPGs around right now that will take advantage of those specs. Maybe when (if) S.T.A.L.K.E.R comes out. -

Registered 15 years agoThe only rpg's that need a decent system are Oblivion and NWN2 (with little payoff), and they are the only decent rpg's to come out in the last 12 months on the pc.

Else, go for Wizardry 7 or the gold version of it, best pc rpg in my book. Hard as leather tho. -

Wizardry 8 is fabulous as well. Different, but equally good IMO (yes, heresy, yadda yadda) and technically slightly more up-to-date.
Such a shame it had to be the last of the series ;_; I'm still secretly hoping another developer/publisher will resurrect the series... well, as long as it's not EA
Incidentally, are any worthwhile RPGs schuled for this year (demos, previews, first impression articles maybe)?
I happened across a rather impressive release list on this forum but the bulk appeared to be either MMORPGs or diablo clones; few 'real' RPGs from what I could tell

Registered 13 years agoNeverwinter Nights 2 is the best game out at the minute and its pretty stable with the new patches. You also get the benefit of new modules for it in a year or so.
The problem with Oblivion is that its more akin to GTA then a RPG. Though i would recommend its predecessor Morrowind. Like Marmite, some people really love Oblivion but others with more sense hate it
If you want something older then try Knights of the Old Republic as it's still one of the best RPGs out there.
