4th replacement or you have bought 4 different phones?

    I have a Nokia N80 right now, that's also a heap of crap :)

ah, I remember my dad's ipaq being like that, too. Anything else that makes them crap? Don't mind about that too much, the N80 has a notoriously bad battery life but I charge every night anyway.

XDA, XDA II, XDA Exec, Vario.

The main problem is not being able to turn them off.

Sitting on a train, watching you batteries run out ather than saving the juice for when you need it FTUL.

Damn Microsoft and their decision to call all devices running windows with mobile phone bits the same thing.

The XDA look quite different to that Orange SPV E650.

My SPV C500 runs Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphones (back when they distinguished between smartphones and PDAs that can make calls) and works just the same as any other phone, with extra smartphone stuff on top.

As far as I can gather from a quick google search, the E650 seems to be the same sort of thing, albiet much cooler.

I wouldn't personally call any of the phones you listed "Smartphones". I'd call them PDAs that can make calls. However, they are called smartphones, which makes things confusing because they are vastly different from my phone, which is also a smartphone.

if they have a touchscreen, they are a PDA with a phone plugin :)

I want something that can do what my N80 does
browse the web on wifi, take crap pics (3.2mp camera my ass), nice screen,

the SPV seems to be ok, bigger screen - more like the n73's beast but smaller resolution than my 352x416.....wifi is a bonus with that qwerty keyboard and it's thinner than my n80

anyway, apps? anyone got stuff i must be aware of?

I used to make use out of Agile Messenger everyday (MSN, Yahoo etc), it was a brilliant app. Then it came out of beta and they're charging for just a subscription; you can't buy it outright. I'd rather use the - awful - live messenger.

Opera's good, as is Egress (an RSS Feeder). You have to purchase both, but I've found them to be worth it. There are free alternatives but I found those to be the best at what they do.

Total Commander is a decent file explorer. TCPMP is a video player that handles just about anything you can throw at it. Those two are free.

I use these on the MDA Pro/O2 Exec/HTC Universal on WM5. I'm not sure whether the Pocket PC software works on the 'smartphones', but I'm sure the relevant devs would at least provide for both.

I don't know how I nearly forgot it, but I use an unregistered version of Tomeraider to browse an offline version of Wikipedia. I use that as much as any app. You miss every fifth entry with it being unregistered, but if I'm desperate for that article I just load up Opera.

I'm definitely downsizing when my contract's up in December. It's fantastic having the keyboard and VGA resolution, but sometimes it can just be too big. Something like the E650 would be ideal. The iPhone looks appealing, but it's a no-go if it costs a bomb (which it will do by Christmas, if it's out then at all) and it doesn't do 3G.

I use AvantGo a lot on my 2003 Smartphone. Means I can read lots of stuff without having to pay extortionate internet rates.

thanks guys, I've phoned orange and they say I can use it for a few days when I get it (this is a few months away anyway, around June) and if it's not my cup of tea - just send it back. Forgot about that 'cooling off' period thing. Hopefully I like it , I like the form factor
