the N80 was the last phone Nokia released that was completely jam packed full of features... the result? A fucking buggy mess with a terrible battery...seriously, wait a month or 2 when it's out to find out if the N95 is the same story.

    /puts N80 on ebay AGAIN :)

I've had my eye on this for a while now. On the look out for a new phone, and the GPS is getting more and more attractive to me.

/has a terrible sense of direction.

Well, I've held a dummy of it, and it's nowhere near as big as the N80. Much, much thinner.

    What's the N73 like?

I've got one, there's a lot of people on the Nokia forums complaining about the software being buggy. The problem, apparently, stems from the fact that the mobile service providers have to approve the OS updates independantly of Nokia... and of course they don't care as soon as they've got your money... and Nokia have a habit (recently) of rushing phones out with buggy OS's. So it's not a great situation for the end users.

That said, mine has been mostly fine. It can be a tad slow and has crashed a few times plus a few other niggles, but it's not TOO bad and certainly doesn't suffer from the problems i've been seeing on the forums. I imagine a new N73 would come pre-loaded with slightly newer software rather than the REALLY old ones.

Camera is okay, althhough you'll get a blue-ish noise in low light conditions.

    Hope that helps :)

Cheers. I'm thinking of buying one unlocked, how would I then get updates if Nokia don't provide them?

    Nokia Service Centre's.

    Nokia will provide them though.

These can be downloaded via the web and uploaded (thus updating) your N95.

you don't need to go to a nokia service centre, use nokia software updater, lets you do it at home with the usb cable for your phone

go here - I update my N80 all the time :)

Looking for a data plan this time around, though... anyone know if orange offer unlimited browsing packages like tmobile? not seeing anything for new customers but just wondered if anyone had been offered anything when upgrading.

I've had one for 2 weeks now. Its terrible. Actually let me qualify that - the individual elements of it are great - the screen is lovely, media playback is nice. However put them all together and you have a phone that is a real mess, and unfortunately another example of Nokia's race to have lots of features that look great on paper, and forgetting the basics.

For example, the phone doesn't have any central awareness of its state of connectedness - if you download and use the podcasting application it doesn't care if you are already connected to the internet via wireless lan, it makes you disconnect first, and then choose a new access point. No doubt that's down to how the series 60 operating system works but its stupid. You cannot choose a default wireless lan point and match it with a default WAP access point - you can make one the default for each application, or you can be asked every single time.

The screen causes a high pitch whistle during phone calls (although you have to be young/have decent hearing to hear that - I can only hear it with one ear).

I also found that if you set the phone to use a default wireless lan access point, and it can't find it, the phone will crash.

Camera - 5 megapixel but HUGE delay between pressing the button and the picture being taken, even more so if the flash is involved.

Sat Nav is nice, but will drain the battery in 15 minutes so buy a car charger. It also seems to use a data connection throughout the journeys. Had a couple of glitches where it stopped tracking where we were, and "at the next roundabout......" nothing.

You will NEED an unlimited data bundle - just opening the eurogamer homepage causes 300 KB of data according to the phone, so any browsing and you'll run up a very large data bill.

RSS feeds are accessed via the web browser, rather than being their own stand alone applicaion as found in SonyEricsson phones. I prefer the way SE do it - for me RSS feeds are all about reading stuff in a dedicated application, rather than reading it as another web page.

Oh, and Nokia have seen fit not to put a hard cover over the screen, so you can squash the LCD crystals with your finger - god knows what the long term effect of having it in your pocket with your keys is going to be like.

I have owned a N91, N80, and the N95, all which have failed on me and Vodafone say they are having issues with the phones themselves.

They are great phones despite there reliability, but they were doing my head in so I opted for a Sony Erricson W850i (White)

can I ask what you pay a month and if orange made you go to an 18 month contract?

I pay £25 a month right now and want to get the Orange £8 unlimited data bundle (anytime) but if they don't give me it I'm leaving to TMobile

ah ok, I get a bit of a crap signal from them etc.. and texts arrive late so I will probably move to TMobile who actually have a much better signal in my area (most people say this is not the case with tmobile!)

no, most of the N series use mini or micro SD cards... however, many phones could play patched NGage games... my dad used to play them on his N70 and I did it on my 6680.

Nokia are relaunching a new NGage platform which isn't going to be tied to 1 specific device but will be compatible with several phones. I think it's any of the ones that do 3d acceleration like the N93, N95 etc but could span even wider.

US N95 announced with bigger battery, no camera lense cover and there are rumours of 128mb ram...but if they did do it this would be great news for the non qwerty users.
