| I didn't get in (/spits at organisers, signs up for Edinburgh instead) but I just wondered if any of you lot are doing it this year? I seem to remember there were one or two EGers did it last year. |

Registered 17 years agonot this year, i'll probably be doing a 10k at harewood house in sept/oct. Not anywhere near as difficult, but i'll hopefully still be able to make a bit of cash for charity

On topic: What are the requirements for doing it anyway. And who thought that Jade Goody was qualified to take part or, for that matter, take part in anything. Or move.
You've got to apply for a place through a ballot and you get in (or not) based on age, sex (missus!), predicted finishing time etc. It's about a 1 in 5 chance of getting in. If you don't get a place you can get a place through a charity but you're obligated to raise anything from about £1,000 to £2,000 which is a lot of hassle when you're training for a marathon. -

It is actually, plus my wife works for the sponsors so I get to go in the posh tent afterwards! -

Registered 15 years agoAye. It's just that London is the biggie. And I want to do it because it's home, so to speak.
I'm not doing any more charity races until I do get a place in London anyway, I've always said I'll do it before I'm 30 which gives me three more attempts at the ballot and if not I'll take a charity place. -

Registered 17 years agoI'd be terrified! I'm quite glad I didn't get in. There's no way I would have done enough training by now.
I was scheduled to do the Reading half but it was cancelled due to snow. Some crazy bastards ran it anyway. I walked over to the gym and attempted to do the distance on the treadmill given that I was all psyched up for it - And I was on for a personal best (sub 1:45) but I didn't realise the bastard treadmill goes into automatic cooldown mode after an hour. I said many bad words at it. I got it going again but was off the pace, so had to run super quick for a KM to get back on the right pace but that absolutely fucked me and I gave up.
In rather a nice gesture, all the Reading half runners have been given a £40 evoucher for Sports Direct in light of the race cancellation. I used mine yesterday -

I’m yet to buy anything of any quality in Sportsdirect, when I started running I used them a bit for odd items of clothing but they were all shit, even the branded stuff seems to be B grade or something or other, I suspect some of the branded stuff, Nike, Adidas, etc make stuff specifically for selling in Sportsdirect, or license some shit producer to make it on their behalf, I use them solely for kids items now or stuff where the quality really doesn’t matter ie a cheap kit bag. And WTF is the collection charge about, you have to pay a delivery charge to collect something you’ve ordered online from the store, sure they have to send it on a van to the store for you to collect but who else does that? Anyway you lightweight you should have run it!.gif)

Registered 17 years agoMeh, I bought a pair of cheapo K Swiss to use as gym shoes. Yeah you're right on the quality in general though, really shite!
I'm toying with the idea of the Amsterdam marathon in 2019, apparently you pay your fee and you're in. No ballot nonsense. Plus it will be flat, and I hear you can get good massages afterwards to recuperate. -

I've done a 14 week plan and followed it about 90% . Could have done a bit more core strength training and speed work. My diet was about 60% and I'm about 7 pounds heavier than I planned to be so not too bad. My longest run was 18 miles but the last 2 were hell. Probably didn't help that I only had one gel during it. Can comfortable do a half marathon now in just over 2 but the thought of doing that again is quite daunting. Be happy with around 5 hours so something like 11 min miles . Seems slow but over that distance hurts . Love to do quicker but as it's the first one id rather enjoy it a bit. Any advice from people who have done one would be appreciated

Registered 17 years agoI have no desire to ever do a full marathon, I've done a few half's now but they're pretty easy, really just double a good run but doubling that up again is well beyond my ability, I think I'd permanently screw my knees and/or other bits. I kind of have an admiration for marathon runners but also think you're a bit mental. -

Registered 16 years agoThe only tip I can really give is not to try anything for the first time on race day. Just stick to food, drinks, gels, clothes and shoes that you have previously used in training.
Also decide on the pace you want and stick to it even if you are feeling better than you expect. I remember feeling pretty good around half way and upping my pace a bit to try and get a faster time and paying the price for it in the last few miles.
I've never had much interest in doing a second but it is a great achievement to tick off the bucket list. -

Registered 17 years agoI don't know how the fuck you can eat those gels. They're claggy and vile, I would choke I think. I can just about chug a 5 hour energy shot but that's about it -

Registered 11 years ago100% a bucket list thing for me. Done a few tough mudders which are fun. I'm not looking forward to the state of my knees! The whole atmosphere looks great though
Thanks for advice on pace. I was thinking of sticking with the 5 hour pacer runner and if I had any more in tank last 6 then maybe quicker . Quite possible though it could be the pacer group leaving me behind by then. -

Registered 17 years agoI have two gels on a half, I think they help a bit, one tip I remember reading was to only consume the gels you’re used to so if you’re gonna drink (eat?) them then only take the brand you’ve used on your training runs to avoid any dicky tummies! I don’t know why but I suddenly started getting nipple rub, I never had it for the first 18months of running and about the first four 4 half’s, then suddenly got it and anything over about 8 miles I will get it, I have resorted to those blooming nipple plaster things which are a fag but seem to work. -

Registered 17 years ago@mangojoe I popped along to Primark in my lunch hour, they're stuff looks kind of OK actually and for the price i might give a top a whirl, decent running gear seems a bloomin pricey to me, I have to get it on special, I seem to favour Nike tops and shorts, Skins tights and 2XU compression shorts. When you see a pair of shorts at £40 or something and they don't seem anything particularly special you gotta wonder if you're buying a name. -
I run in £5 swimming trunks from Decathalon and whatever old t shirt I can find
