I'm curious about your final itinerary now. What did you end up doing?

    Or more likely:

    Day 1, 11am - Went to Dampkring
    Day 6 - 6pm - Left Dampkring, went home

Good stuff. I was just talking to my latest ex about an Amsterdam trip a few days ago.

I've not been since 2006 - I'm LONG overdue a return visit. Glad that the right-wingers haven't messed up the weed tourism aspect!

So landed and got the train just out of Amsterdam paintballing. Then went to check into the hotel where the stag and myself stayed in a converted tram in the centre of the hotel! Then pubbed up through ledersplein through some awesome little places before eating some of the tastiest chicken ever at beirfabriek with our own tap on the table.

After being sufficiently full and drunk it was onto the red light to see a show at moulin rouge and observe the crazy goings on! Followed by an awesome night at the nightclub air! Just so happened to have the legendary dj luck and mc neat on the mic!

The second day started brilliantly with all of us heading to an old brothel window down the RLD taking some ridiculous photos of the stag dressed up... And ended with us getting ridiculously stoned folloeed by a comedy show at Boom Chicago!

All in all. Pretty nutty! :)

I have to say, you've done Amsterdam wrong.

Not one of you lay under a glass coffee table whilst it was shat on, nobody got mugged...you may as well have had a fucking spliff in Blackpool.

    6/10. Not nutty.

Anyone been to Amsterdam during the festive period?

Currently struggling to decide between it and Vienna for the yearly Christmas weekend (early December) with the missus. Vienna has more history and presumably more stuff to do (being bigger than Amsterdam), but Amsterdam feels like it has a fair bit more character. As well as appearing to be a more beautiful city.

Edit; and Vienna from what I can gather has better Christmas markets.

I'd go for Vienna for the beauty, atmosphere, xmas markets, chance of snow etc.
    It'll have more tourists though.

Nothing says Christmas like getting your stomach pumped out at the A&E.

Amsterdam is beautiful that time of the year. And as you say, loads of character. It's annoyingly type-cast as a stag do/lads weekend destination, but it's such a great place.

If you want to stay a little bit out of the city there's a great hotel in a place called Zaandam (one stop from Amsterdam Central - it'll come up on Google as the architecture is quite bonkers); cheap and good for a couple.

    @POPTONES

Thanks, preliminary research suggests Amsterdam (and the Netherlands as a whole) isn't the best place to go for Christmas-sy things though. Would you concur with that?

The canals and the light festival are very attractive propositions.

Good point, that. Wouldn't be a deciding factor but worth me bearing in mind. Cheers. Vienna is more expensive though, no?

Vienna most definitely, Amsterdam winters are very grey, drizzly affairs even though the city is quite lovely. There's always plenty of tourists no matter what time of year and the centre is a bit of a circus, I'd only consider going to the Netherlands in the summer personally when there's the slim chance of decent weather.

I went to Amsterdam about 2 weeks ago and it was absolutely boiling hot the whole time

I'd not been for about 10 years but it hadn't changed much at all

I have a week off work next week and I was thinking of maybe checking out Amsterdam for a couple of days, just me solo checking out the sights of Europe.

Anything in particular that stands out for a gawping tourist like me (apart from the obvious red - light and weed suggestions, I'm too old for that shit 😉

@Garfy It depends on what type of stuff you like. I really enjoy the area around the red light district, although the Brits bring it down a bit by throwing their rubbish on the floor and generally treating the place as a toilet

The area around Vondelpark is quite cool and the park is nice to sit out in the sun

The best thing we did was get one of those hop on, hop off boat tickets and went around on the canals looking for places we could go back to later
