Well after giving this a severe hammering last night I can safely say its going to be a time zapping parasite of epic proportions. The difficulty level does leave a bit to be desired as I haven't lost a game yet but that can be ramped up and obviously the online will be the sternest and most realistic test. All in all its worryingly, worryingly addictive. The reason Virtua Tennis so good is because it takes a simple, balanced gameplay mechanic and makes a game that relies on skill and technique.
Despite the arcade nature of its appearance, with just 3 core shots it manages to maintain an even playing field in multiplayer and single player. Top Spin 2 is only really comfortably playable in single player, the addition of risk shots and exposed power serves means a player with the right technique can expose the flaws in the gameplay mechanic and therefore online play becomes void especially in ranked enviroments.
Virtua Tennis 3 allows you to feel that when that ball bounces for the second time and you give away the point that it was genuinley your fault in your movement or shot choice etc.. and not the fault of a broken gameplay mechanic and over complex contorl ritual. -
