On my actual machine the full game was replaced with a demo of the first level only - which pissed me off a bit considering that I paid for the full game originally |

I think it’s more that they don’t care. The amount of people who replay games is low and I would think the amount who replay them over console generations is even lower. Certainly, I don’t give a shit if I can’t play assassins creed 12 again in 10 years time.
Right now, a lot of digital buyers are under the illusion that they will always have access to their digital purchases and that those purchases will all carry over to future consoles.

I still think this is a cop out, to be honest. If a service turns off, you should be given the opportunity to download the item with no DRM and be able to restore it to any other consoles of the same type you buy at your leisure. If they're turning off the download service it's fairly certain that the software is no longer commercially viable.
As long as you keep the original console, all digital Wii and Wii U purchases remain tied to the console. You might lose access to re-download them, but if you have them downloaded they're not going anywhere. They're not going to magically disappear.
It's a weird situation to be in when we're dependent on hackers/pirate groups to archive the history of a console. If the Wii etc. weren't cracked open, there would be WiiWare games that would have been completely erased from existence as consoles get broken/sent to landfill/erased and recycled. -

Registered 4 years agoWhat's the life expectancy on a console hard drive? I'm sure in the next 10 years if you retro game on your PS3 they'll be some that break. But yeah you can argue your average joe doesn't care, but I bought those games.. -

For now, yes. However consoles are getting so well secured that it won't be an option forever or the barrier to entry will be high (e.g. specialist hardware/cables etc.)

Not to mention that you paid for that stuff, you shouldn't be needing to head out to warez sites or do anything complicated to play an old abandonware game you paid for a decade ago.
Sadly, not enough people care to make this an issue. -

It's why I never bought any DLC or live account games on my 360 and preferred disc releases only. Sadly, the modern days of patching releases on release day means that's largely not very doable these days, and the fact they do this without provided a mechanism to enable you to do local backups is pretty much unforgivable. It stopped me paying anything towards more modern consoles, so now I pretty much only ever retrogame.
