Age of Conan Page 30

Gaol, your critisisms seem to be a it strange. A lot of them seem to be things that could be aimed at any mmo (show me an mmo that doesn't have kill x amount of these for a reward and xp)

Also, some of the issues you describe are limitations of your knowledge of the game rather than it being a bit shit.

Uninspired design seems a bit unfair. I've not seen too many buildings, towns etc in AoC that have made me think 'this looks the same as that other town'. WoW is the undisputed king of lazy design with the next town being the same as the last but arranged slightly differently. Also, I much prefer the more realistic approach to item design where you can actually see the quality of the piece rather than it having a purple glow to indicate it uberness.

They ain't strange at all, your defense is more wooly than my criticism. My knowledge of the game is limited to 30 levels, thats all I can bear tbh.

To say WoW has lazy design leaves me incredulous. How long did you play it for? I only played for two stints of 3 months, one as alliance on launch; one as horde after BC. Both times the journey to level cap was hugely varied and exciting. Most folk who whinge about WoW have played it for a long, long time and have long since lost a sense of perspective on it.

I'm not saying I am equivocally right on AoC, its just my shout, but it seems really limited; more limited than even Lineage II which is its closest 'traditional with pvp endgame' equivalent. The whole 3 button 'strike it lucky' hit scheme is a red herring, combat has a lot less depth than even the original EQ. And to compare the world design to WoWs is a horrible mismatch - look at the options WoW had even at launch in terms of the newbie experience - AoC has a single generic pirate village which folk who enjoy alts will quickly learn to hate.

Played WoW since beta. Still do play occasionaly. It's style is fantastic. No-one can deny that and for newcomers it is a brilliant world to start in with all the different races etc. But, you are bang on, after playing it for ages, it is all the same to me and boring as hell.

You obviously don't like it so there's no much point in arguing about why I think you're wrong on the combat.

Well, just because WoW had so many start areas didn't mean they offered anything vastly different! The purpose of a re-roll (for me) is to experience the game from a different perspective.

Sure Tortage is unchanged, but playing as a Guardian vs. a Tempest of Set vs. a Priest of Mitra is going to significantly alter the experience. (I say this having rolled all three and tried 'em a bit ;-) ).

I vehemently disagree with your characterisation of the "strike it lucky" combat. I've never felt so engaged in an MMORPG's combat, and frankly going back to auto-attack on my WoW characters is going to be shit. Sure it's a gimmick of sorts, but so was the reloading system in Gears of War and now I can't play any shooters without missing it. :)

Shame you don't like it, or more precisely that you don't think it was even worth the £25 for the first month. That seems very harsh to me, as there's easily enough SP RPG content in there to have enjoyed it, but you live you learn I guess.

Yeah I don't feel that burnt though, I got a fair few hours out of it. And SoE musta been listening to my good words about EQ2 I have apparently just been offered 2 months free play and the latest expansion for nowt (?).

Can get details here, seems open to all previous accounts, even trials.

So at least I'll have somethin else to look at after AoC's free month expires :)

I am really loving my guardian by the way, its an awesome class

I found a program so i can bind stuff to my mouse buttons now

left mouse button - left attack
middle mouse button - forward attack
right mouse button - right attack
ctrl + left mouse button - switch to def stance
ctrl + middle mouse button - weapon switch
ctrl + right mouse button - switch to frenzy stance

this means i can stance dance and weapon switch and attack alll while circling my enemy to avoid combos.

I can be in def stance (which makes me close to invincible) and i can use shield bash, switch to frenzy and polearm and hammer a couple of combos while they are knocked back.

Also by switching to polearm i can use the stagger knock back, giving me two knockbacks to use.

    Here is my guardian :D

I'm still on the quest for more FPS.
Anyone know the vista command for turning of all the extra non microsoft things on start up?
  • Deleted user 4 June 2008 12:43:37
    @Trafford.

I think its msconfig, then go to startup. It should have a list of the programs there.

I really want this but I'm not really able to give 32GB of space to it...

    From todays article...

"In June we're giving several dungeons in Stygia a complete overhaul. We're going over some quests to make them even more entertaining and adding a bunch of post-level 50 quests. We're adding voice-overs to a ton of quests pasts level 20 - about one each level - and we're putting in lots of quests that didn't make it for launch," revealed Ellingsen.

"Also for June - we're not completely binding ourself to a date yet - is an overhaul of the PvP system. We're making it so ganking has consequences! Very cool. Plus we're adding PvP gear and things like that."

    Nice!

    Horsey Horsey!

This is why I don't play MMOs, I'd be doing that sort of stuff all the time.

I just had my first battle of the lag spikes. Spiking from 28ms to 9800ms every few seconds... I wouldn't mind but I was getting swamped with mobs at the time.

In the case of lagspikes the lack of any kind of autoattack means you're pretty much toast if the spike kicks in. Gah.

Someone was moaning about lack of instances, they only start to kick in at level 35+. What I like is that you have a mix of solo instances and group ones. The group ones showing off nicely how each person in the party needs to play properly rather than merely fill a one-dimensional role. So much faster paced than WoW as well.

Just hit 21 tonight and got out of Tortage. The game well and truly has me in its thrall now. At times the combat has made me feel like I'm playing Titan Quest/Diablo 2 as I'm wading through hordes of bad guys and leaving trails of corpses and burning encampments behind me.

Much as I loved my WoW characters (Mage, Priest, and Huntard primarily) none of them made me feel as empowered as my Guardian in Conan.

Instancing was a little jarring at first, but now I actually appreciate it. A little loading is preferable to having to run/ride x minutes of empty world in WoW to allow it to stream in the next area. I've also been pleasantly surprised at the pickup groups and the attitude of the players. Almost universally friendly, polite, and fun to play with.

I've read that the quality drops off rather sharply here, so I'll have to see how long the honeymoon period lasts, but as of this moment I've ploughed a good 20+ hours into the game over a couple of characters and have really enjoyed it. Not the worst way to burn £25. :)

Just can't make up my mind on this game.

My Necro hit 30 tonight and got the new caster pets. Bloody rubbish. I also got an AOE root/damage. Ridiculous cooldown. Oh, and a spell to increase my army size by sacrificing a huge amount of health.

Still using mostly rank 1 spells as the scaling seems a bit borked for damage per mana at rank 2...god only knows how bad it will be at rank 3.

Still can't kill as quickly as any melee class.

    Still dieing loads.

    Still enjoying it. Weird.

At mid 30's you should check out the solo instances in Khemi and go to Wild Lands.

It's around 50 where it really starts gets brutal in terms of lack of quests. Hope they patch in those new quests soon.

First time I never even got through the free month.

This is the worst mmorpg I've ever played; and I've played just about all of them. Yes, even worse than Neocron. Completely bemused at to how anyone can derive an ounce of enjoyment from it.

In fact its the worst game I've played in several years. And I can't even return it or sell it on. Which is why I am venting.

DO NOT BUY THIS STEAMING PILE OF HORSESHIT.

Heh, just a rant; most mmorpg fans already bought it the release schedule is so barren. But I really do think its the lousiest thing I bought in a long time for a whole heap of reasons. OK I really must...

It's not a bad game at all, although it is the weakest release of the ones I've played. Rushed out the door to get established before Wrath of the Lich King and Warhammer.

I am only playing it as there's nothing else out that catches my eye.
