E6420's out next week if you want to save a bit of cash and invest in a slightly better GPU ?

Auh yeah... awful... terrible! Seriously, I doubt that rig can even run Quake 3 at a decent resolution...

And wtf? No £3000 Falcon Northwest custom paint job? How can you call yourself a serious PC gamer?

Im not too sure about a VIA chipset to be honest mate, i've always found them to be shite(IMO.) With that CPU, i have an Asus P5N32-E SLI mobo, which has an nforce 680i chipset, its all good. Well recommended.

You could save yourself a few bob on the CPU for starter. I assume that the motherboard you're looking at supports quad-core processors (I'll check that out in a minute), so you may be better going for the Intel 4300 C2D. It's fast enough so that it won't bottleneck your system, and it's so easily overclockable it's untrue. Even with the stock cooler it's possible to double it's speed. Really. I know you pointed this out to me last month, but you'd be crazy to spend that much money on a E6600. Better off waiting until the Quads come down in price and jump up to them.

    P5N32-E isn't a great overclocker tbh.

    Great for SLi, though.

I intend to upgrade in about 3 months time. I haven't been following developments on the hardware front at all of late however... I assume Quad Core is the way to go?

Wouldn't touch a VIA chipset again in a bazillion years, get a 650 or 680 based Nvidia one.

What he said. I've had terrible experiences with VIA chipsets; wouldn't want any in my PC's anymore. I too would recommend an nVidia instead.

I'm not very fond of ABit either for the same reasons, although that may have been bad luck. Still, I really don't mind chipping out for an Asus these days.
More expensive, yes, but a motherboard is the last component I want trouble with.

Thanks all so far, good thing I asked about that mobo, eh? :)

Good point, Mike, but I've realised in the meantime that the price difference between the E4300 and the E6600 isn't that big - and I am not sure the quads will come down to a sensible price/performance ratio anytime soon.

Cheers also, Clive, didn't know the new ones were out so soon! Might be worth waiting a couple of weeks, really.

Yea, go with an ASUS. Pair it with Corsair or OCZ. G.Skill and a few others can be a bit pissy with the newer ASUS mobo's.

Also, I'd recommend Enermax, or a Corsair HX 620 for the PSU.

In case you want to know what did it: patching Silent Hunter IV last night, upping the resolution (which now works properly), and enabling AA in the drivers.

It looks unbelievably gorgeous, but my FPS dropped to slightly over 20. While it's not a game that requires fast reactions, the animations (water etc.) started to look a bit choppy.

Now I would have bought a new PC in the summer anyway, might as well buy it now, right? RIGHT?

Fair enough, I figured the E4300 will easily last me 12 months so by that time the Quads should be more reasonable. Over here the 6600 is nearly double the price.

    My recent upgrade consisted of:
    -Intel E4300 Core2Duo CPU Retail
    -Corsair DDR2 TWINX 2GB PC6400
    -ASUS P5N32-E SLI PLUS C55/MCP5
    -320 XFX 8800GTS XXX 580* PCI-E

And I'm able to play Stalker, absolutely maxxed out at 1900x1200 and it's pretty slick.

Yup, over 'ere the 6600 is nearly double the price. Mighty fine CPU, is the 4300.

Wish I'd waited a bit and got one instead of the E6600. :|

Run a 4300 with AS5 and a Zalman 9500cu (forget the MASSIVE 9700) and OC it like no tomorrow.

Incidently, I noticed the 8600 cards came onto the market this week. Benching similar to the X1950pro / 7900gs series only with SM4/DX10 support which is pretty pointless at the moment.

Im still intrigued by everyone getting DX10 cards when we dont know how even the top-of-range ones will perform with any DX10 games.

I can almost hear the thousands of muffled cries when Crysis only manages 15fps in DX10 mode on a spangly 720mb 8800.

Does SH4 make use of dual cores then ? So far the only game I've found that uses them is Supreme Commander, and even then performance still sucks.

Quite, investing a lot of money in DX10 hardware at the moment might not be such a good idea.

Plus there's no DX10 software so it hardly matters.

The thing is, the DX10 (especially the 8800 GTS) cards have an excellent best price-/performance ratio for DX9 stuff as well - and are, at least in theory, a bit more future-proof. Not much point in buying a card that costs almost as much, but is even slower, just because it doesn't have DX10 support.

At the very least, it'll allow me to see if the difference in graphical quality is worth another upgrade once the first DX10 games are out, and the card turns out to be too slow. ;)

I doubt that, though - the new 8600GT, for example, is considerably slower than the 8800 GTS, and is meant to be the spiritual succesor of the Ti4600/6600GT/7600GT, so chances are good even this slower card will perform well with DX10 (as Nvidia have a bit of a reputation to lose with these mid-range cards).

Depends how much the 8800GTS you want costs, doesn't it?

Being stuck with a DX10 card that isn't very good at DX10 isn't much fun.

The 6600GT was one of the first SM3.0 cards around and that sucks at SM3.0.

Paying £80 on something like a 7900GS or (if you must go ATi) X1950Pro (£100) could be the wiser choice at the moment.

I'm just about to upgrade to a similar spec, Lou. E6600 is a good choice, C2 Quads are pointless right now unless you're planning on holding onto them for more than a couple of years - in non multi-threaded applications they're outperformed by equivalent Core 2 Duo's.
    I'm getting: E6600, Gigabyte GA-N680SLI-DQ6, 4GB RAM, Cooler Master 830, Seasonic 700W, 8800GTX, couple of hard disks.

Btw, I have a brand new Enermax Galaxy 1000W for sale if anyone is interested.

Why? It's shit. Poncy over-priced keyboard for people more concerned with looks than functionality. And useless for a gaming system because it doesn't have a numpad.
