    well it's 1066MHz not 800MHz.

Duals won't be bandwidth limited, but a later quad might be, and for 40 quid you're getting a decent bit of future proofing.

It's not silly money like the DDR3 stuff which can be 200 quid plus for 2Gb.

Personally I'd say go for a seperate case and PSU.

I was never that happy with my Antec, and because they're integrated they are a bit non-standard so it could be a bugger to replace a PSU later.

    My options were:
I got one of the [link=http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-023-OC">OCZ 600W PSUs and a monster huge Coolermaster and

Well if you've got it already it'll save you cash.

450W is definitely enough for the moment, I'd just not recommends buying one again :p

Option 2, the Antec Solo is a nice case I had it but my arms snapped when I tried lifting it off the floor.

I'm guessing the 512mb will run hotter, which may cause a problem.

    /Hijack mode on

I'm also thinking of upgrading my PC along similar lines. I've already got a fairly decent case to use but need to replace pretty much everything in it.

The main thing I'm looking for is a good PC that will last a few years and will be particularly good for video editing, rather than just gaming. For that reason I'm thinking a quad processor, a separate large hard drive for video and a smaller one for software. I also imagine I need fairly decent ram and want a motherboard with the option to get better/more ram at a later date.

Video card is not too important as it's not for the latest games, but having said that once I've got it I'll probably want to play some of them.

So I've been following this thread and looking at overclockers and come up with the following....

    OcUK ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (£79.89)
    Hitachi Deskstar T7K500 NCQ 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (£68.14)
    Hitachi Deskstar 7K160 NCQ 160GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (£31.71)
    Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (£180.94)
    Asus P5KC Combo Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 & DDR3 Motherboard (£99.86)
    Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel Kit (£99.86)

    Total : £570.92

Ideally I'd rather spend round the £500 mark or less. Where do you think I could cut some corners on that? Also is there anything I am forgetting? Like I said, I already have a case and PSU, I assume these are standard and would work with this? Is this energy efficient processor any better than the standard one for the extra £20? I'm thinking more from noise perspective, rather than overclocking potential.

Any comments would be really helpful. I'm also being somewhat indecisive about this whole thing.

edit/ sorry that was a bit long winded....

Are you sure you need DDR3 RAM? At a guess, the performance gain is probably minimal (to 800 MHz DDR-2 RAM), and you could easily save 40 quid or so there.

    edit:

Oh, sorry, it is DDR2 - but still, 1066. :)

Uncle Lou, what speed would you recommend?

I suppose I can always get faster ram at a later date as long as the motherboard can handle it.

I built a new PC last year into an Antec Solo

    Pros:

    Looks great
Easier to build with than my old Sonata
    Supplied fan runs quietly
    Looks great

    Cons:

    No PSU
    Weighs a ton

So there you go, it's a nice case is what i'm trying to say I guess

Its also a falicy to replace bits and pieces like that.

Rather than cannibalising a few bits and pieces here and there, sell the whole unit and put the money towards a new case or something, rather than having a few old bits and pieces kicking around.

It's only 40 quid more rather than the silly silly prices for DDR3 at the moment.

Personally I'd say go for it.... especially since he's said video work.

He'll be able to overclock easily, or in the future fairly cheaply upgrade the CPU since intel have promised the 45nm processors will be compatible with the P35 boards.
