There is always this for homebrew, unless you are looking to use the touchscreen. It's pretty good and more processing power than DS I think. -

But to be real i only use it to sample ds games mostly (call it "pirate" if you must, but i do buy the goods ones i swear!). If you are just going for homebrew, i would still recommend the older slot-2 devices with their onboard ram. -

Registered 16 years agoHow good is this for running homebrew stuff? Especially DSOrganise.
I only had a look at homebrew the other day using a Max Media Dock and bought an R4DS last night (though the site I got it from now seems to be down :-/ ) to see what its like cause the MMD is bulky and ugly. -
Not sure how well it runs DSorganise but if it runs on the datel device the R4 should be fine. The R4 is a much more popular cart. It's also not bulky at all. Its almost identical in size to a real DS cart.

I was looking at the M3 Light - $62 from I-Mediaplayer.com which includes a 2Gb Micro SD card.
Are they any good or is the R4DS better? -

They are pretty much identical. In fact at one time you could use R4 firmware on M3 Simply. I think the R4 release firmware updates slightly earlier than M3. -

Harsh, but fair. On the topic of piratey things, I thought I'd ask you lot - and nekotcha particularly, being in the position he is - about this.
One of my mates, who bought his Wii at launch with me, recently expressed a desire to get it modded. I scoffed a bit and mumbled something about jolly rogering, but he said that, nope, the greatest benefit for him would be the ability to play back-ups. And he does mean back-ups: You see, he has two children, of four and two years. They are quite harsh on gaming equipment (his Wii no longer has any doors over it's memory card slots, etc).
Thus: Is there really no defense for wanting to make back-ups? I know for a fact he always copies his DVDs, keeping the originals away from the wee ones... is it different with games? -

Registered 19 years agoYou'll always get moral crusaders saying it's wrong to do it for any reason, but what your mate is doing (or wants to do) is absoloutely fine. I'd probably do exactly the same if I had kids and no radiators to handcuff them to.
On a side note, I personally have no problem with what groundbeef says he does either. If you're using such a device just to sample games for a day or two and buying any that you like, I can't see that as morally wrong at all.
Why should you have to fork over £20-25 just to find out whether you like a game or not? Download it, play it, if you like it, buy it, if you don't, delete the ROM. Considering the amount of shovelware and utter shite that gets shoehorned onto the DS, it's a sensible and reasonable course of action. -
Problem is that nobody applies the 'try and then buy' policy 100% of the time. Everyone I have ever known who has pirated games claims to only be sampling them and then buying the ones they like, but I've never known a single one to not occasionally 'forget' to buy a game they ended up playing all the way through, or to play many, many hours of something that's 'too crap' to be worth buying. At the end of the day, you get a few hours entertainment out of something, you should be paying it, to help fund the people who made it so they can perhaps carry on making a living making good games.
Honestly I do agree completely that people should have a right to try before they buy though, and the more legal avenues to sampling games before deciding whether to buy them, the better, as far as I'm concerned.
Edit: Oh, and I'm not a 'moral crusader', just someone who's plunged an ungoldy amount of hours and hard work into making games. Although I'll admit I was a bit pissed off when I made that original post.
