So you can watch videos, listen to music, playing old games, with no difference in quality?

Basically I'm not shooting myself in the foot in the long run by getting an M3 because the R4 isn't in stock?

Can anyone give me an idiot proof guide on how to get Moonshell to run on the M3DS Real?
  • Deleted user 3 January 2008 19:39:39
Isnt Moonshell the R4 firmware? if so, it wont work on M3....

Good thing about R4 is that there are much more regular updates for it compared to M3 AFAIK.

It's on http://dcemu.co.uk/ which I cant seem to connect to.

It's not the most polished game compared to the real thing but it has nice backgrounds and some nice commercial music. Only had a couple of goes mind but it's a keeper.

@Battleaxe and Leeman, a lot of R4 units went out of stock in July. And they're shipping the next stock sometime this month which is probably why yours hasn't arrived.

On topic: I browsed a lot of sites, and R4s range from $40+ (You could find a $30, but it would be rare). Most site out out of stock right now, and you'll probably have to wait a little before you can get one for a good price.

Woo-hoo.. Consoleup have finally shipped my M3 simply after ordering it a month ago.

The swines have had my money in their account the whole time and I was about to cancel and ask for it back, still better late than never!

Any kind soul out there who can point me in the direction of the Spectrum emulator homebrew which I hear is available?

Can someone explain the difference between a R4DS card and a SuperCard because this bit has me confused.
My mate said he bought a super card and I was quite impressed with the video and music capabilities and of course the use for him ''backing up'' his games but everyone is talking about the R4, which is best and waht's the difference please?

Edit - And what's the best all round one of these at the moment?

depends on what you're after really. the r4 is generally easier to use (at least when it comes to running, ahem, backups straight off the bat) but the supercard has more features (real time save for one, and the later version supports SDHC). they both have the same video and music capabilities since it's provided by moonshell on both cards, but in the supercard it's integrated in the OS, whereas on the R4 you select a media icon on the main screen to launch a separate program.

as for the best all round..fuck knows. honestly. M3 Simply is the same as the R4, then you've got the M3 Real and Acekard RPG and TopTop and Cyclo which all apparently have advantages in one area or another (but I've never used them) and there'a few others that have been knocking around for ages but don't really measure up to the current crop anymore. Just don't touch the DS-Extreme with a bargepole and you'll be fine.

I have got the cyclo and am very happy with it.
When people talk about putting homebrew on their ds, do emulators fall under that banner?

    Yes.

There's a version of ScumVM for DS that's emulatorish and one of the best homebrews for DS, imo.

If you would never pay for them in the first place then you aren't harming anyone, or taking any money away from the devs. I love the way people liken digital piracy to going into a shop and stealing a DVD (which they can't therefore sell and costs everyone money), when such comparisons are illogical.

How is renting games any different? It's a matter of degrees, you're not paying the full price for the game, but you're experiencing it (and thus taking money from devs by your logic).

(btw I do not advocate piracy, but some people make it out to be a much bigger problem than it is)

That's how it is, its theft, rationalise it however you like but you might aswell be a hoody wearing chav scumbag stealing someones bike.

Edit : After reading the thread I just brought one, got an itch for some Day of the Tentacle at work.

Renting is completely different. 1) it's bought from the publisher/distributor at a higher cost in order to cover the liscence to rent the product and 2), and this one is much more important (see if you can follow as to why...), it's legal.

If you do not buy a product you should not have it, it's as simple as that. While the actual act of downloading/burning a game is completely different fom actually having the bollocks to walk into a store and take something (it's far easier to sit on your arse at home) the fallout is very similar, though it affects different people...

Taking from a store hurts the store and it's owners - they have already bought the product from the publisher. Downloading a game at home hurts the companies behind the games directly and this *does* have an effect on the people that produce them and their abilities to continue doing so, which in turn will have a knock on effect to the stores that sell them and their workers, etc, etc.

So, digital piracy actually has a further reaching and far more damaging impact than regular store theft (not that that's a better solution). It is a big problem, it's not getting smaller and completely retarded opinions such as your own, openly thrown around in a strange attempt to justify it in some ludicrous manner, help no-one.

I don't suppose anyone here as used ReadMore on the R4 have they? Or knows how to fix the bookmarking?

I've created the 'states' folder so it should work? The bookmarks work whilst I'm still in the book, but if I switch my DS off, the bookmarks all get lost and I have to scroll to the page I was last at (which is annoying when you're on about page 300 of a book!).

Aside from that, it's a really good piece of software :)
