    A friend of mine has asked me to procure a couple of these for him. What's the current recommendation? When I got my R4 a year or so ago, it was considered the best way to go, is this still the case?

    I use a DSTT, it's very nice and uses those microSD cards.

    Had my DSTT for about 6 months now, never had a single problem!

    I would get a CycloDS, great firmware support, no homebrew compatibility problems and it supports SDHC (4gb+ cards); it also has moonshell integrated for videos/mp3 etc.

    NEW R4 V3
    Brand new R4-III Cartridge with gilded phosphor bronze interface. It has solved the problem of hard connecting; Low power consumption, support SDHC; multi-language and Perfect compatibility makes R4-III stand out. To simply put it, this is a must have peripheral for any regular DS/DS lite owner

    i got my r4ds from http://www.digimartz.com half a year ago, very great ,almost can play all games , the most important is that r4ds is very cheap , only $28 at this store now.

    CycloDS do the same thing as r4ds, but more expensive.

    Thats a fake clone and it doesn't work with SDHC despite what they claim.

    the r4ds official site is http://www.r4ds.com,
    but R4-III website is http://www.r4dsl.net/index-en.asp
    I think r4-III is not the original r4ds, maybe a fake.

    Hullo folks... my R4DS card seems to say 'Loading' and then nothing else. Anyone have any ideas as to what I've done wrong? This is my first time loading it.

    @ProfessorLesser

    1) Basic question; your microSD does have a kernel on it, yes? That's the official v1.18, and not the fake v1.19 that's doing the rounds.

    2) Try reinserting the R4 and/or microSD, in case the connections are slightly off.

    I suggest the second fix is more likely to be the quickest fix ;)

    There was a bloke selling R4's version 2 on the market for 15 quid with a 2 meg micro-card. Bought one to try it, works fine. I'm currently filling it with loads of homebrew apps and games from the various 'homebrew' sites out there. Downside is I've stopped playing a lot of my commercial games - they are sat mournfully looking down from the bookcase.

    seriously R4s are not worth buying anymore. the original makers disbanded about two months back, there will be no more official firmware updates, the real ones aren't being manufactured anymore and all the clones (including fake R4s, N5, R4 III, NDSL R4, E7, NPlayer, MARS, R4 Advance etc etc etc) are patchy at best. the unofficial YsMenu is alright but that runs on other things as well.

    personally i'd recommend an Acekard 2 (which is also very very cheap from the right places, ie dealextreme), and lots of people seem to like the CycloDS so thats probably worth a look as well. don't bother with the DSTT, its a bit arse.

    Just ordered the AceKard2 for $13.99 from DealExtreme.
    Seems a bit suspect but i have my fingers crossed, i might go for a CycloDS but they're £30 from Techizwad so i think i'll wait and see what happens with the AceKard before ordering.

    Damn, i've spent too much this month. ;_;

    Honestly, the Cyclo is worth the few extra bob. I haven't had a single problem in the last 8 months.

    Damnit, having problems with my microSD card. Having been enjoing my R4DS for a couple of weeks now, I've just tried adding some games to it, but when I insert the USB pen into my laptop it says the drive isn't formatted... yet the card still works in my DS and I remember formatting it the last time. What's this all about?! I don't want to format and lose all my savedata :-(
  • Deleted user 20 October 2008 00:35:52
    Try a different usb writer. The same thing happened to one of mine. Got a new USB reader/writer and it worked perfectly.

    Nice one, cheers! That's annoying though, as the previous one was much more portable, and still worked with other microSD cards, just not this one :-(

    Any other ways round this? Guess I could copy all the save files and then format the card. Yeah, I'll do that.
  • Deleted user 20 October 2008 01:10:09
    Its possibly not the wrtier in that case. When mine went it wouldn't work with any cards at all.

    Ah. That's weird then. I tried using the SD microadapter it came with, and that worked. Just the USB pen that doesn't work.

    My DSTT from dealextreme is still going strong, not sure on the R4's.
  • Deleted user 23 October 2008 11:09:42
    The R4 is a dead cart, no longer made or supported. If you want something cheap go for the EDGE or Acekard 2.
