Also, as a rule - read the readme files of each mod you download.

    Alright thanks.

Only problem with that site is some of the files you need to subscribe to download them.

Are there any other ones that don't need the subscription?

I used to get mine from that site, but they've added free registration now. Hmm. Worth signing up though, there's lots on that site.

There's also The Elder Scrolls Source - http://www.tessource.net/index.php

Small files you can download without signing in, otherwise you'll need to reg an account.

Some recommended - if not essential - mods:

Cyrodiil Transportation Network (adds boats, mage teleports etc)
    Deadlier Traps (one-hit kill traps)
Francesco's Mod (all kinds of balancing fixes, new monsters - tons of stuff)
Natural Environments (very nice, but will slideshow the game on slower computers)
Realistic Arrow Flight (makes arrows faster)
Where's My Horse? (find your lost horsey)
Thievery in the Imperial City (nice additional quest)
    Saddle Bags (handy!)
    Boots of Blinding Speed (fun!)
Dark UI (useful and attractive makeover for the interface)
Elven Map (nice skin for the map)
Bag of Holding (bag for storing items that weighs nothing - bit of a cheat depending on how much you hate ferrying loot back and forth)
Illumination Within (makes the windows in towns light up a night, subtle but effective)
ArmoryLab (not used it, but I hear it's pretty useful)
