Camping - family tent recommendations? Page 3

We went camping with our two little ones last autumn (2 and a half and 9 months). We actually took two tents, boys in one and girls in the other. Our friends came with us and brought this huge two bedroom monstrosity that took about an hour and a half to put up. We were done in about half an hour.

Meant I managed to sleep through the night feeds too :)

We had our first night with our latest arrival at the weekend (he's 19 months).
We have a 5 man dome tent, with a sit-in porch on the front. Took him a while to sleep, but did not wake up till 6. The 4 and 6 yr olds were fine too.

Went just north of Loch Lomond, absolutely beautiful.

Less than an hour from the middle of Glasgow, but just amazing scenery. It always makes me feel bad that we have all this amazing countryside on our doorstep, but don't make much use of it. Hopefully when the kids are a bit older, we can go walking and cycling. I'm planning to getting the train to Tarbet and cycling back to Glasgow in a few weeks, down the side of Loch Lomond.

We spent a fortnight on the shores of Loch Awe when I was a teenager. Alternated between hiking and cycling. One of my favourite holidays.

Just bought a 5 meter bell tent. Looking forward to using it this weekend if it gets delivered in time. :)

Thinking of getting one of these for our camping holiday this Summer. Anyone got one/ever stayed in one?

Stayed in the bell tent for the first time last weekend and it's bloody brilliant.

An amusing clip certainly, but I'm not sure of the relevance to family tents.

Never been to sure about those and there ability to hold up to some good Scottish weather and provide a safe bolt hole from the Midge.

All the rubber guy loops have perished on my beloved Force 10, I'm now trying to repair them with bungie cord prior to my weekend Glencoe camp. Can't let the old girl die.

Well, it was pretty windy on Friday evening and it stood up just fine. And we had far less bugs inside than we used to get on our 'normal' tent.

I'm surprised they aren't more popular really - they absolutely kick the arse of your average tent.

We've just booked a few days posh camping! Also a few days in a wooden wigwam nearer to Oban, so if it rains you'll have some extra customers Goban!

The 4th picture down make it looks like it's slightly over-pitched. The creases in the front suggest that it was pitched without the door done up. Or maybe some of the side guys are too tight.

I think they must have tied the side guy ropes too right as ours didn't look like that. Ours looked awesome :)

    Good work!

Too many Scout summer camp tent inspections means I'm alert to poor pitching and incorrect guying.

    Looks like fun.

Never known this part of the county to be so dry, it's great, but not for cinema.

I used to go on military-style summer camps in those bell tents when I was a child, we used to have tent inspection every morning, all guys had to be tightened *just so* with the appropriate level of tension, the bottom flaps had to be rolled up *just so* to allow thorough aeration, camp beds positioned *just so* with sleeping bags and blankets folded *just so*... God damn it was fun. The winning tent would be allowed a bottle of corona fizzy pop and at the end of the week the overall winners were allowed a midnight feast!

    @Goban

Yeah, I can highly recommend them.

Still dry up there? We had hardly any rain during our week on the Isle of Skye and that really surprised me.

It's slightly freaky, i've been expecting rain for 5 months now and all we get is the odd day.

Yep - that's what my Scout summer camps were like - in some respects the group was stuck in the 50s.
Hated it as a kid, but look back on it with very rose-coloured specs now.

Apparently we've on had 16% of the normal rain levels this year so far.

So we just got a Citadel 5 from Wild Country - seems ok for a summer family tent styleeee.

So has anyone got any good camp sites around the south coast / new forest type area for say a 3 night break?

I'd lay on extra staff for the 25th June, that's when the deluge will start.

I even look upon the ritual night-time spit-roasting by Akela and Bagheera with warm nostalgic affection. Good times!
