It was for comedic effect, my scout camps were dull, my bell tent camping adventures were with a church youth group called Warriors, we used to have to do sword drill with our bibles. The bearded leader would have us stand to attention, we would hold our bibles under our arms, he would yell READY! and we would extend our arms holding our bibles at the read, AIM! we would place both hands on our bibles ready to open them, FIRE! METHUSALEH CHAPTER 158 VERSE 208867!! and we would rush to be the first to find said chapter and verse, which we would then read aloud in a falsetto screech AND THE LORD SPAKE UNTO JAPHETH AND SAID UNTO HIM SPILL NOT YOUR SEED UPON THE LOINS OF THE WHORE OF MOAB FOR SHE IS UNCLEAN AND MAGGOTS SHALL CONSUME HER RANCID FLESH O CHILDREN OF ISRAEL!!
So yeah. The camping was fun. I'm an atheist now btw. -

Gosh...
Even exaggerated for comedic effect, the truth behind this is an eye-opener! -

My mate has this monster as a family tent, which fantastic, assuming you don't have to carry it anywhere. -

Registered 16 years agoI'm taking our 5 month old dog camping with me this weekend, last time I had the tent out he thought it was fantastic, running about like a little loon. He could be trouble. -

Apparently we've on had 16% of the normal rain levels this year so far.
I'd lay on extra staff for the 25th June, that's when the deluge will start. -

Heh heh, good luck with that!
We're planning on taking our 10 month old dog camping at the start of July. She's a bit bonkers, so I foresee many mishaps. She also doesn't travel well, so we intend to cover our car in newspaper to catch all the vomit. -

Registered 16 years agoStanley travels pretty well, he just tends to get a bit over-excited, bouncing around like a mad thing. If he gets too difficult I can always cage him in the car for a while, usually chills him out.
At least I don't have a pregnant wife and 4 year old to worry about, piece of cake

Registered 16 years agoWell, summer's here, and I went to the shop to buy some bits and bobs for camping, but ended up getting a new tent too. Got told that pop-up tents are 'dinosaurs' now, it all about the air tents...?
Old one was like this
This is the new one https://www.kampa.co.uk/tent/studland-8-air-pro
Bit of an upgrade

Oh man, would love to get something like that.
Here's the thing though - lots of weak minded types (like me) think the same way. That means they are getting rid of their older tents. Incredibly easy to pick up a Montana 6 or better at a silly price.
I know the air-beam tent thing is amazing but if you have ever used a well designed "premium" tent the ease of setup is pretty close.
So while I agree the new shiny is tempting, I would seriously look at some non-air-beam options as you could get a serious bargain these days. -

This was me. I'd got by with camping with a lack of equipment, for a few years now. Now we know we like it, we've bought some of the bits that make things more comfortable.

Got a 'real' fridge, lighting, bigger stove, that kind of stuff. I thin it is going to make things far more enjoyable.
And a big bastard tent of course

Registered 16 years agoYeah, basically that, and no door locks.
I bought a carpet, and a small heater as well.
Shame on me
I'm not exactly roughing it at all really

We had to stop buying stuff a while back, even with a roof box we had no more space. One of the (transparently dodgy) reasons I want an airbeam tent...would save a little bit of volume.
The real reason is that they are cool. Don't tell the wife. -

Registered 16 years agoYeah I haven't found air beam any easier than a normal pole tent. If faff or matching poles.to holes is a doddle on modern tents and nothing compared to working out which way round the whole bloody thing goes and pegging it down properly. -

Registered 17 years agoMy friend has one of these that I share with her at festivals, it's such a nice tent. Canvas is where it's at. OK it's heavy so you're not going hiking with it but it terms of comfort it's hard to beat

Registered 13 years agoI mean that's the ideal setup isn't it. Lodge at a friend's tent. -
I just bought some absolutely baddass tentpegs for it too. They're like 8 inch steel nails
